Documentation
editWow - you seem to be kicking along nicely with your articles. Citation templates and subsections and all that jazz. Nice work. I've got a query about the "documentation" section in Robert Dale Owen Statue article - don't you think it a little self referential to talk about the course you're doing as part of the encyclopedic article? I mean, if you were going to provide a reference to the fact of this WPSPA course existing you'd have to footnote the Wikiproject page and even cite this article in the selfsame article, right? I can think of only two cases offhand where a WP article is justified in citing the internal workings of Wikipedia itself - Seigenthaler controversy and National Portrait Gallery copyright conflicts - both of which made world headlines. I'd suggest trying to write the article without reference to your course. I don't mean to be overly picky, it's just that you're so far advanced that I feel I can start commenting on your work :-) Keep it up! Witty Lama 10:34, 7 November 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks for keeping your eye on us, Liam. It's great having your input as we go along rather than coming to you in a worrisome way at a later date, as per usual. I just wanted to say that she added the Documentation section because some students in last year's class included one out of desperation to fill in some information and not have their articles deleted, such as in Torso Fragment. I think we thought because we were featured in the Chronicle of Higher Education our project was worthy enough to be included in the article. Totally understand if you think not! - My heart skipped a beat because I thought "Uh, oh. This is the point where the article is going to be taken down..." Glad it was just the documentation question. As HstryQT said, I was just following the examples from what I saw from last year's project. I'm not married to the section. I have a feeling I will be completely changing this article in the next month as we discuss it further in class. - No one is going to take your article down from within your own userpage sub section. Any content in "mainspace"/"articlespace" is fair game for all of the editorial rules, but things living within the "userspace" don't come under those rules. That's why you've been asked to edit in Sandboxes for the moment because no one will come along and jump on your content until you're ready. But yeah, the documentation section is probably going to have to be cut. I don't think the mere fact if this work being catalogued in SOS is interesting (because that project was trying to make a comprehensive survey it would potentially be more interesting if it WASN'T included) and the fact of this work being set as part of an assignment for a university course is not a significant feature of it's history either. Moving Page
editHi Erin. Good to see you confirmed the accurate name for your Frank O'Bannon Bust article. Means you must be getting in some good research! I'd ask that you check out WP:Move to understand the Moving a Page process. I wanted for you to do it yourself, but remembered that your account is probably too new to do so. Because of this, I moved it for you. For your next article, make sure you understand Naming conventions, too. As well as what we've compiled in WSPA. These are helpful resources. - It was all out of necessity. The baby is finally taking predictable naps during the day...I have to use that time very wisely before he decides to change up on me again the next week! I've learned to be productive in a short period of time. Plus, I became kind of pleased with myself for learning the basics on Wikipedia so I was excited to get something up. WSPA image
editHi Erin,
Thanks for taking the WSPA image off again. It's not appropriate to promote a WikiProject on the page itself. We've tried it in the past and it didn't go over too well. The way to promote the project is to add the WSPA banner on the talk page (which you've already added). So you're good to go. If you see anyone else re-add the WSPA information, the image, or the links, feel free to remove them or let me know. It's a good thought, but just doesn't fly in Wiki-land. Thanks! Hi Erin! I wanted to personally invite you to The Children's Museum of Indianapolis' 2nd Backstage Pass and Edit-a-Thon, which will occur on Saturday, August 20. It'd be great to have you come out if you are able!
The Wikipedian in Residence project is coming up on one year and is going strong. While the first year focused on garnering institutional enthusiasm among staff, organizing multiple content donations, and guiding teens in research and article creation, the next year will focus on establishing an E-Volunteer program and more deliberately connecting with local Wikipedians and WikiProjects around the world. You can read a summary of our projects on the museum's blog, or visit the project page.
We hope you're able to attend the upcoming Backstage Pass! If you're not able to attend, but are interested in remaining involved and up to date on the museum's Wikipedia project, please sign up on our E-Volunteer page. Children's Museum update
editIt's time again to share the latest news on the Children's Museum of Indianapolis Wikipedia project! In the last few months we have been busy with our third image donation, which was made up of 150 images that were professionally photographed specifically for this upload. We are asking for volunteers to categorize these images and distribute them into Wikipedia articles. Your help is appreciated! Check them out here.
We have also donated our first video and a second GLAM-Wiki Infographic to Commons. In September we were thrilled to welcome Jimmy Wales to the museum. Following our successful Edit-a-Thon and Translate-a-Thon in August, translations have continued with the help of the established QRpedia community, (particularly Russian translations thanks to Lvova!) We have begun to analyze our implementation of QRpedia codes and completed an extensive case study. In November we presented at the Museum Computer Network conference about how museums can effectively collaborate with Wikipedia. You can see more details on the Prezi.
In more general news, in addition to serving as the Children's Museum's Wikipedian-in-Residence, it was recently announced that I will be taking on the role of US Cultural Partnerships Coordinator for the Wikimedia Foundation. In this role I will be working to streamline the process of connecting interested US GLAMs with the Wikipedia community. If you have any questions or suggestions, feel free to let me know. Be sure to sign up for This Month in GLAM to keep up with the latest GLAM-Wiki news from around the world (subscribe).
We have a listing of High Need and Moderate Need requests on the Ways to Help section on the project page. I encourage you to lend a hand if you're able. editThanks for uploading File:Missing bust on owen memorial.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file agreed to license it under the given license.
If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either
- make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
- Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.
If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en wikimedia.org.
If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included.
