Editing news 2021 #2
editRead this in another language • Subscription list for this newsletter
Earlier this year, the Editing team ran a large study of the Reply Tool. The main goal was to find out whether the Reply Tool helped newer editors communicate on wiki. The second goal was to see whether the comments that newer editors made using the tool needed to be reverted more frequently than comments newer editors made with the existing wikitext page editor.
The key results were:
- Newer editors who had automatic ("default on") access to the Reply tool were more likely to post a comment on a talk page.
- The comments that newer editors made with the Reply Tool were also less likely to be reverted than the comments that newer editors made with page editing.
These results give the Editing team confidence that the tool is helpful.
Looking ahead
The team is planning to make the Reply tool available to everyone as an opt-out preference in the coming months. This has already happened at the Arabic, Czech, and Hungarian Wikipedias.
The next step is to resolve a technical challenge. Then, they will deploy the Reply tool first to the Wikipedias that participated in the study. After that, they will deploy it, in stages, to the other Wikipedias and all WMF-hosted wikis.
You can turn on "Discussion Tools" in Beta Features now. After you get the Reply tool, you can change your preferences at any time in Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-editing-discussion.

Timeline Articles
editHey CodingCyclone! Hope all is well for you. I wanted to check up on how editing has been going, as I've been seeing you editing many timeline articles, and I was wondering how it has been working out since after our discussion regarding how and what to edit. Are you liking the process? Have there been any difficulties that you've faced? Also didn't you get a FL? If so, congrats! Stay safe, happy editing. - 🌀CycloneFootball71🏈 |sandbox 03:02, 18 June 2021 (UTC)
- @CycloneFootball71: Thanks for checking in! Yeah, I've settled into the timeline niche quite well, thank you. I did get an FL, yes! Anyway, I guess the only difficulty I've had is just figuring out what to work on and also decoding the JTWC's best track data. I kinda rage-quit on that one, but I'll get back to it soon (
never). LOL! I hope you're staying safe too. codingcyclone advisories/damages 03:41, 18 June 2021 (UTC)- Very glad to hear that! Congratulations on the Featured List! That is a big feat! Lol, sorry to hear about that, it can definitely be difficult. Glad to hear everything is well, I am staying safe myself, Thanks. 🌀CycloneFootball71🏈 |sandbox 03:58, 18 June 2021 (UTC)

I know I'm joining the party late, but I want to congratulate you on the promotion of your first featured list! You did some really good work on it. Keep up the good work! Destroyer (Alternate account) 17:07, 24 June 2021 (UTC) |
- @Destroyeraa-alt: Thank you so much!!! I didn't really bring it up to speed, but still, I'm happy. It's great to see you back! codingcyclone advisories/damages 17:55, 24 June 2021 (UTC)
2019 Atlantic hurricane season TL
editConcerning Timeline of the 2019 Atlantic hurricane season:
I have fixed some wind speed and distance conversions, changed operational stuff for TCR, added key distances to land , and included needed hyperlinks, for Subtropical Storm Andrea, Hurricane Barry, and Tropical Depression Three. Now that it is a featured list article, you might wish to consider giving the TL a thorough look-over for other places where updates and fine-tuning are needed. If you decide to do so, I'd be glad to assist. Drdpw (talk) 23:40, 30 June 2021 (UTC)
- Ah, so that is what you meant. LOL. Yeah, after I f i n a l l y finish Hurricane Paulette. I keep putting that thing off! Anyway, I I'll certainly be looking at that as well as some old timelines after I finish timelines for the 2018 global FT. Timelines, timelines, timelines. LOL. Thanks for telling me about this! codingcyclone advisories/damages 02:49, 1 July 2021 (UTC)

Hey..
editI don't know where to put this, but I have a problem with eh tracking map generator. I even made track maps yesterday, but why today, I didn't because there is a problem, which says that Value must be greater than or equal to zero. Im making a Southern Hemisphere track map and the latitudes and longitudes are like this: -7.58, 95.55. The same I made for Georgette 1968, which became successful yesterday. Thankiies and sorry for a bad grammar, I'm not that native for this. 🌀HurricaneParrot🐦 08:15, 8 July 2021 (UTC)
- @HurricaneParrot: Sorry about that! Instead of putting negative numbers, you have to use the dropdown menu to choose between north and south/east and west. I hope that makes sense. Thanks for coming to me about this. I can ask CodingCactus if they can add a function to also use negative numbers. codingcyclone advisories/damages 17:26, 8 July 2021 (UTC)

JayTee🕊️🇺🇸 02:08, 18 July 2021 (UTC)
- @JayTee32: Thank you so much for the kind words! (sorry it took so long.) Thank you for reviewing it! codingcyclone advisories/damages 03:00, 18 July 2021 (UTC)
First of all, this website is amazing, I can make track map of historical cyclones. So my question is, can we use the track generated by this website, in Wikipedia ? Beraniladri19 🌀🌀 06:45, 22 July 2021 (UTC)
I would add, I want really to publish track maps for old tropical cyclones (but I can't because the size of the map is just small and zoomed, in which the typical size is 1,024 × 633 pixels in other track maps like the one in In-fa and Cempaka 2021). Liked the new update in which there's now a choice in whether we'll put the informations via manual or in HURDAT/BT. Cheers to you and the other person who developed this! 🌀HurricaneParrot🐦 11:26, 22 July 2021 (UTC)
- @HurricaneParrot and Beraniladri19: I would refrain from uploading track maps on the website at this time, since it is still a work in progress. codingcyclone advisories/damages 21:45, 22 July 2021 (UTC)
- CodingCyclone, ok thanks Beraniladri19 🌀🌀 02:34, 23 July 2021 (UTC)
