Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. Yes the InterCity 125 IS the world's fastest diesel train

edit

There have been claims that the record set by that train has been broken, but these were never proven. To prove that the InterCity 125 is NOT the world's fastest diesel train, those claims must first be proven to be correct. They haven't, so the InterCity 125 is the world's fastest diesel train. Simples! Captain Cornwall (talk) 19:54, 30 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

Unfortunately, that is not the way Wikipedia works. You have to verify all that you claim. Sorry. Bhtpbank (talk) 21:54, 30 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

ArbCom elections are now open!

edit

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Death/Killing of Jo Cox

edit

You should not have moved this page without opening a discussion first and gaining consensus on the matter, since we reached consensus not too long ago that the page should be at Killing of Jo Cox. I have listed the redirect for speedy deletion so we can move it back. This is Paul (talk) 16:47, 13 July 2016 (UTC)Reply

Absolutely agree with This is Paul. The problem may be that the extensive earlier discussion does not seem to appear on the article talk page for some reason. Ghmyrtle (talk) 16:51, 13 July 2016 (UTC)Reply
I think it got archived, which may be my fault because I set it up to move anything older than a week when the talk page was having a lot of use. This is Paul (talk) 17:10, 13 July 2016 (UTC)Reply

Please do not add or change content, as you did at Conservative Party (UK), without citing a reliable source using an inline citation that clearly supports the material. The burden is on the person wishing to keep in the material to meet these requirements, as a necessary (but not always sufficient) condition. Please review the guidelines at Wikipedia:Citing sources and take this opportunity to add references to the article. Thank you. David J Johnson (talk) 08:43, 10 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

OK. But I noticed that you referred to it as a POV edit. Let me make it clear that saying that the edit was POV is false. It was not. I do not make POV edits. Thank you. Captain Cornwall (talk) 20:02, 10 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

Suggest you look at the comments by multiple editors on this page, referring to lack of citations. If there are no references/citations to your contributions, your comments will be regarded as your own POV. Also, please indent your reply, as per normal Wikipedia style. This message contains important information about an administrative situation on Wikipedia. It does not imply any misconduct regarding your own contributions to date.

Please carefully read this information:

The Arbitration Committee has authorised discretionary sanctions to be used for edits and pages regarding pseudoscience and fringe science, a topic which you have edited. The Committee's decision is here.

Discretionary sanctions is a system of conduct regulation designed to minimize disruption to controversial topics. This means uninvolved administrators can impose sanctions for edits relating to the topic that do not adhere to the purpose of Wikipedia, our standards of behavior, or relevant policies. Administrators may impose sanctions such as editing restrictions, bans, or blocks. This message is to notify you that sanctions are authorised for the topic you are editing. Before continuing to edit this topic, please familiarise yourself with the discretionary sanctions system. Don't hesitate to contact me or another editor if you have any questions.

I did not start. What you are accusing me of doing is false. Please stop trying to get revenge on me - that's what I believe you are doing. It will not solve anything. Captain Cornwall (talk) 22:15, 16 July 2018 (UTC)Reply

Did you not make this edit?[1] Does not the source cited clearly say "Britain’s General Medical Council, citing ethical violations and a failure to disclose financial conflicts of interest, revoked Mr. Wakefield’s medical license"?[2]
I have no personal animosity against you and certainly would not want any sort of "revenge" even if such was in my power, which it is not. I will not, however, allow you to replace material that faithfully reproduces what the source actually says with what, according to your WP:OR, the The source meant to say. That's not how encyclopedias work.
I have no objection to anything that is supported by a citation to a reliable source. I strongly object to changing the article to say something that the existing source does not say. Get a better source or leave the article alone. --Guy Macon (talk) 01:02, 17 July 2018 (UTC)Reply
I did make that edit, but there was a perfectly valid reason for it. I have since added two sources saying that he was struck off, and in the future, I suggest that if you have no personal animosity towards someone, don't act in a way that could imply it. Captain Cornwall (talk) 10:15, 17 July 2018 (UTC)Reply
You should have added the new source when you made your original edit. Making edits so that the article no longer says what the source says is not allowed. Don't do it again.
I deny acting in a way that implies personal animosity. This is about your behavior, not about me informing you that your behavior is unacceptable. If you have a problem with such basic aspects of editing an encyclopedia as WP:V and WP:OR, I suggest that you either change your attitude and take the chip off of your shoulder or find some other encyclopedia that allows you to make edits without providing a source to back them up. --Guy Macon (talk) 14:04, 17 July 2018 (UTC)Reply
Well, the source is there now. Captain Cornwall (talk) 16:27, 17 July 2018 (UTC)Reply
You are to be commended for adding high-quality sources that support your edit. Thank you. --Guy Macon (talk) 20:57, 17 July 2018 (UTC)Reply

River Severn - Longest UK river

edit

Hi, There's a bit more to this than you might think. Over on Longest rivers of the United Kingdom it explains:

the Thames tributary, the River Churn, sourced at Seven Springs, adds 14 miles (23 km) to the length of the Thames (from its traditional source at Thames Head). The Churn/Thames' length at 229 miles (369 km) is therefore greater than the Severn's length of 220 miles (354 km). Thus, the combined Churn/Thames river would top the list. Sue Owen et al., in their book on rivers, generally restrict the length to the parts that bear the same name. Thus the River Nene is quoted at 100 miles (160 km), but would be around 5 miles (8 km) more if the variously named sources were included. Many of the above lengths are considerably different from Sue Owen's list, some longer and some shorter.

Where a river ends in an estuary the conventional British approach has been to treat the river as ending at the end of the administrative zone. Thus the Severn ends at the mouth of the Bristol Avon and the Thames at the Yantlet Line. The currently accepted end of the Severn Estuary is about 18.5 miles (29.8 km) further, and the PLA's authority stretches now to Margate, 30 miles (48 km) further. Other countries have different conventions, making comparisons of limited value.

OTOH, I agree that seeming to be unsure without explaining why is not satisfactory. Cavrdg (talk) 08:46, 26 July 2018 (UTC)Reply

Discretionary sanctions notice

edit

This is a standard message to notify contributors about an administrative ruling in effect. It does not imply that there are any issues with your contributions to date.

You have shown interest in gender-related disputes or controversies or in people associated with them. Due to past disruption in this topic area, a more stringent set of rules called discretionary sanctions is in effect. Any administrator may impose sanctions on editors who do not strictly follow Wikipedia's policies, or the page-specific restrictions, when making edits related to the topic.

To opt out of receiving messages like this one, place {{Ds/aware}} on your user talk page and specify in the template the topic areas that you would like to opt out of alerts about. For additional information, please see the guidance on discretionary sanctions and the Arbitration Committee's decision here. If you have any questions, or any doubts regarding what edits are appropriate, you are welcome to discuss them with me or any other editor.

Hello. I have noticed that you often edit without using an edit summary. Please do your best to always fill in the summary field. This helps your fellow editors use their time more productively, rather than spending it unnecessarily scrutinizing and verifying your work. Even a short summary is better than no summary, and summaries are particularly important for large, complex, or potentially controversial edits. To help yourself remember, you may wish to check the "prompt me when entering a blank edit summary" box in your preferences. Thanks! Danners430 (talk) 14:39, 15 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi @Captain Cornwall, I’m noticing you’re continuing to edit without edit summaries - please include them wherever possible. Danners430 (talk) 17:32, 17 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

ArbCom 2024 Elections voter message

edit

Hello! Voting in the 2024 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 2 December 2024. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2024 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:28, 19 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
