Newystats (talk) 11:39, 20 August 2023 (UTC)Linking years
editHello. While linking years was common during in English Wikipedia's early years, the practice was abandoned a long time ago and is not in conformance with the Manual of Style. Largoplazo (talk) 19:35, 6 September 2023 (UTC)
- do you mean that this act is not accepted right now? and why it's been abandoned? A0m0rajab (talk) 19:42, 6 September 2023 (UTC)
- That's correct. If you look, you'll see that someone else has reverted all those edits. I'm not certain why but I think it's because it was felt that readers see years in text all the time, and it very rarely triggers the desire to learn more about that year outside of the context of the article they're reading. Also, there's more general guidance against linking terms that readers probably don't need help with, and weighing their value against the disruption to smooth reading produced by an abundance of links. See WP:OVERLINKING. Largoplazo (talk) 19:48, 6 September 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you for explaining and letting me know! what contributions that I could do tho? I am trying to get familiar and contribute to the wiki these days. and I did not realize till now that the 170 links I did was useless lol. A0m0rajab (talk) 20:53, 6 September 2023 (UTC)
- I'm sorry, I understand that's frustrating! One thought, if you're confident in your editing abilities and are interested in improving the writing in articles, is that you could look through some of the thousands of articles listed under subcategories of Category:Articles needing cleanup. Each of the articles listed there has a cleanup tag at the top, placed there by somebody who felt the writing should be better, and hopefully with a note as to why. See if you can find any articles that interest you and tackle them. Let me know if you'd like me to go over anything with you if you give this a go. Largoplazo (talk) 21:38, 6 September 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you for that, I had a quick check and was wondering if there is a similar page based on topics? I would like to check it. A0m0rajab (talk) 07:52, 8 September 2023 (UTC)
- That would be useful but maintenance categories aren't broken down that way. However, you could choose a category, browse through the articles in it, and see if any can use attention. Largoplazo (talk) 21:57, 9 September 2023 (UTC)
- That's a great advice, thank you for that! I will check them definitely. A0m0rajab (talk) 22:35, 9 September 2023 (UTC)
