Biography
editShoshana (Rosa) Kleiner was born in 1902 in Brody, Poland (now Ukraine), to Ester Sensyn-Taytelboim and David Moczan, who were merchants.
Pioneer in Israel and Herzliya
editKleiner made Aliyah to the land of Israel as a Halutzah in December 1925 after she crossed the Polish border to Vienna and received her entry passage into Palestine. From there she continued to Italy and sailed with her gar'in on a ship from Trieste in Italy to Alexandria in Egypt and then on to the port of Jaffa. Kleiner made Aliyah to Israel from Poland with the gar'in of the Halutz movement. In those days the conditions were very difficult and the members of the gar'in (also known as the kibbutz) had very little income, food or support. Kleiner acted to change the situation, working in the drying of wetlands and paving of roads, in the orchards, helping in the houses of other residents and in the workers' kitchen. The gar'in initially settled in tents near the moshav Binyamina and the members of the group laboured in the drying of the Cabara wetlands and in the paving of roads in the years 1925-1926. After a year in Binyamina they moved to work in preparing and weeding the terrain for the planting of orchards in the area of Petah Tikva and Ramat Hacovesh.
