I think this diagram is becoming too complex, and the article may be better served with an actual map. Useddenim (talk)

It's the Panama Canal, sir. Not just a railway line (though the rail only has four sations, today!). These hubs are ports (as any harbour this great will be). See also: Template:Suez Canal map. -DePiep (talk) 02:36, 6 January 2013 (UTC)

Yes, I know; I've been there, done that, and swum in Gatun Lake. I just think that if you're going to put that much detail in, an annotated map would be more appropriate and accurate than a overly-complex diagram (which is really only intended to show a basic schematic representation). Template not needed, just add it to the diagram. From Wikipedia:Route diagram template#Tips:

“If an unusual situation requires using a current icon unconventionally, give an explanation either by the text level with the icon or by a note at the top or bottom of the map, separated by an empty row or border line, showing the "misused" icon and its meaning.”
