This convention is observed on every other Olympic Games Sport template, where "gap years" in which the event is not held are indicated as such. It is informative to see that the sport was absent from those Games after it had already been introduced to the Olympic program. See {{Olympic Games Bobsleigh}} for another example - it wasn't held in 1960 because they couldn't afford to build the run. If those gap years are simply omitted, the temptation might be to think that they were forgotten, not intentionally excluded. The same convention is observed in the nation templates for missing years - see {{Infobox Olympics United States}}, where 1980 is indicated the same way, for the boycotted Games. Then why not 1904 ? Hektor 10:11, 21 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
Because that's not a "gap". 1896, 1900, and 1904 are all before the introduction of the sport. If you want to add them in, go ahead, but I don't think that's as useful. Basically, we want to show the sequence of Games covering the span of the sport's history at the Games, but we don't really need to go outside that span. For example, look at {{Olympic Games Snowboarding}}. Would there really be much value in showing all those years before its recent introduction in 1998? Probably not.
