Other signals

A few tens of millions of years from now perhaps the most obvious signal of technological civilisation will be the way placental mammals, particularly large domestic animals, suddenly showed up in places like New Zealand and Hawaii that they really had no way to reach. When talking about the concept of artifacts left on the Moon or elsewhere, how can you possibly talk about this without mentioning Arthur C Clarke's short story "The Sentinel", or the much greater development of the concept in the book and movie "2001: A Space Odyssey"?
