The Pengra Pass rail route, part of the Cascade Line, was built by the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1926 and was later sold to Union Pacific.[1][2][3] The completion of the line linked the Willamette Valley to California via Klamath Falls, an alternate route to the Siskiyou Pass crossing into California.[4][5] The route follows Salt Creek and Route 58 up the Cascade foothills, then crosses the creek on a trestle bridge and steeply ascends the canyon, staying south of the highway while climbing to Pengra Pass near Odell Lake.[4]
