Montréal-Est, Québec → Montreal East, Quebec – The city is usually called "Montreal East" in english

- Oppose While apparently a no-brainer, the online Gazetteer of Canada indicates Montréal-Est (as with other locales named Montréal or a combination) and is the proper name of the (former) municipality. Moreover, this locale is not a name of pan-Canadian significance that may warrant translation – or a move – as proposed (c.f. Sept-Îles). E Pluribus Anthony | talk | 06:50, 10 March 2006 (UTC)

- Support. Should be consistent with the the spelling in most other en-wiki articles. Skeezix1000 01:34, 31 March 2006 (UTC)
- Support as above, for consistency. E Pluribus Anthony | talk | 01:46, 31 March 2006 (UTC)

– change from French language to English language, as this is English Wikipedia. Josethewikier (talk) 13:55, 28 July 2024 (UTC)
- Oppose moves. The French names appear to be more common. O.N.R. (talk) 14:39, 28 July 2024 (UTC)
- Move to Montréal-Est and Montréal-Ouest, which are already primary redirects to their respective articles. See WP:CONCISE and WP:CANPLACE. OP's proposed titles fail WP:COMMONNAME. 162 etc. (talk) 17:23, 28 July 2024 (UTC)
- Comment Note to closer that Category:Montréal-Est, Quebec and Category:Montreal West, Quebec should be renamed according to the outcome of this discussion. 162 etc. (talk) 17:28, 28 July 2024 (UTC)
- Comment, while this is English Wikipedia, it doesn't mean we have to use the English name. It's just that if it's common to leave the name untranslated WP:UE / WP:COMMONNAME, then use that. For example, Trois-Rivières, not Three-Rivers, Conwy, not Conway, Deutsche Bahn, not German Rail(ways/roads), etc. JuniperChill (talk) 19:15, 28 July 2024 (UTC)
- Oppose, this name is commonly used in Enlish. USEENGLISH does not apply.--Ortizesp (talk) 12:44, 29 July 2024 (UTC)
- Oppose current titles are more commonly used in English—blindlynx 13:48, 30 July 2024 (UTC)
- Oppose as per above. I would also suggest considering adding Brome Lake, Quebec (to Lac-Brome, Québec) into the debate for the same reasons.--Roncanada (talk) 20:23, 31 July 2024 (UTC)
- I agree it should be moved, but given the number of !votes already it's probably best to just open a new RM—blindlynx 22:45, 31 July 2024 (UTC)
- I agree that if the consensus is to keep the French names, Lac-Brome should be moved too. Josethewikier (talk) 23:25, 31 July 2024 (UTC)

- Oppose per WP:COMMONNAME. -- Necrothesp (talk) 14:36, 1 August 2024 (UTC)
- Comment I feel like (and I might be wrong, since it's not technically a guideline as far as I know) that we should probably respect the official naming convention set by the Ministère des Affaires municipales et de l'Habitation du Québec and Statistics Canada. For exemple, a lot of cities have english translation for their name but the french version is still the official primary name used, even on their english website (Montréal-Est, Montréal-Ouest, Lac-Brome, Bolton-Est, Bolton Ouest, etc.). while for other cities, the English name is the actual official form (East Angus, East Broughton, Otter Lake, Stanbridge East, North Hatley, etc.). although I might be in the wrong because of WP:COMMONNAME--Roncanada (talk) 15:05, 1 August 2024 (UTC)
- WP:COMMONAME does not give any preferential treatment to official sources such as these. In fact, third-party sources are seen as the most useful. See also WP:OFFICIAL. 162 etc. (talk) 02:30, 2 August 2024 (UTC)
- Comment No objection to the undisambiguated Montréal-Est and Montréal-Ouest, right? 162 etc. (talk) 02:31, 2 August 2024 (UTC)
- sure Josethewikier (talk) 03:47, 2 August 2024 (UTC)
- I support this too. -- Necrothesp (talk) 09:54, 2 August 2024 (UTC)

- Est and Ouest are two different discussions that should be done differently. One should be in French, and the other in English. As resolved after long discussions previously. This discussion neither notified the relevant groups, or the previous participants. Please revert the West change, and if necessary, have a fuller discussion. The official English spelling is very clear at https://montreal-west.ca and common usage is very clear, example 1, example 2, example 3, example 4, example 5. Nfitz (talk) 19:09, 4 August 2024 (UTC)
