Confused

edit

I'm confused. Is this page not the same (except slightly inferior) as this page: MGM cartoon department? Do we really need both of these?

And was MGM's animation department really founded by Hanna and Barbera? I had heard that it existed before they went to work there...

Oh, and the English is poor, I'm sure that the 'founding logo' image is NOT the 'founding logo', and there are many inaccuracies in the whole article.

Fair use rationale for Image:LeoLion2.jpg

edit

Image:LeoLion2.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

The image Image:BarneyBear.jpg is used in this article under a claim of fair use, but it does not have an adequate explanation for why it meets the requirements for such images when used here. In particular, for each page the image is used on, it must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Please check

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for the use in this article.
  • That this article is linked to from the image description page.

The following images also have this problem:

Capitalization question

edit

Is there any clear precedent or reason for not capitalizing "cartoon studio?" Polyglottalstop (talk) 20:11, 30 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Because the studio was never a distinct entity of its own, and was always covered by internal documentation and trade press in the lower-case format resultantly. Its successors in MGM Animation/Visual Arts and MGM Animation had proper (literally and figuratively) names. --FuriousFreddy (talk) 17:10, 9 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

I wonder if MGM made a movie based on Jabberjaw. 03:21, 6 February 2014 (UTC)

Closing date

edit

I'm not clear on the study closing date. In several web pages they affirm that closed permanmen in 1967. And one page of wikipedia include the theatrical animated short films of 1960s: List of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer cartoon studio films. 83.45.246.185 (talk) 20:06, 23 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

Renaming

edit

On 2017-05-31, this article was renamed from Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (with hyphen) to Metro–Goldwyn–Mayer (with endash). As far as I can see this was done without any prior discussion, and by a non-standard method. It had been stable at the old name for years. My inclination is to reinstate the old title. There's guidance at WP:ENDASH:

Generally, use a hyphen in compounded proper names of single entities.

  • Guinea-Bissau; Bissau is the capital, and this distinguishes the country from neighboring Guinea
  • Wilkes-Barre, a single city named after two people, but Minneapolis–Saint Paul, a union of two cities
  • John Lennard-Jones, an individual named after two families

Any objections?

Old Building Location

edit

It may be confusing to people looking for the location of the old building to find the building and intersection no longer exist; Montana Avenue, and in fact several block were removed and replaced by a large retirement community with new street layouts and street names.

I'm not sure how to modify the page to go into the following details, perhaps a new section named "Former Building Location" or "Building History" or some such. Might need some general guidance to make a larger edit, and some of this research is obvious by comparing maps, but not sure how to cite that.

From what I can tell: several blocks in the area where the building was located was demolished in 2003, and replaced by a vast retirement community according to this news item from the Culver City Historical Society.

Montana Ave was a short street that intersected Overland Ave as the third street south of Washington Blvd according to this 1969 map. On a modern map, the approximate location of that intersection seems to be Overland + Palm Court Way.

Another aspect worth documenting is the building at some point became known as the "Filmways Building". This old studio lot map has no date but refers to the building by that name. There are photos showing the "Filmways" logo on the building's facade in this 1972 photo and clearly in this photo, both of which are from this page. One can see it's the same building in this photo from 1953 when the MGM Cartoon Studio was still operating. Greg ercolano (talk) 11:15, 17 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
