Sort key for DEFAULTSORT and listas= parameters

edit

User HISTAM recently moved this article to the title George Scott (victim of racial terror lynching) in order to solve a category sorting issue. Unfortunately such a page move does not solve the problem because the article still appears under its title, not sorted by surname. The way to solve the problem is to insert [the template text] {{DEFAULTSORT:LastName, FirstName, (disambiguation)}} at the end of the article and add listas= to one of the WikiProject banners on the talk page. In this case the sort key probably should be Scott, George, Lynching of - Cameron Dewe (talk) 01:28, 9 April 2022 (UTC)Reply

I think I understand the sortkey, but I'm not sure how to apply listas= . In this case would it be listas=Scott, George, Lynching of  ? -- Jaireeodell (talk) 01:41, 9 April 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Jaireeodell: The listas= parameter is added to the WikiProject banners on the talk page. In this case I have added the parameter |listas=Scott, George, Lynching of to each of the WikiProject banners because there is no WikiProject Biography banner, which is where the parameter is often placed. I have also placed {{DEFAULTSORT:Scott, George, Lynching of}} before the first category so it applies to all the categories as the page is read from top to bottom, so later text over-rides earlier text. I should have clarified my comment that one needs to use the actual sort key text, not the placeholders in the template, for this to work. Consequently, I have updated you edit to make things work properly. - Cameron Dewe (talk) 02:19, 9 April 2022 (UTC)Reply
Thanks! This will be a helpful example for my future use. -- Jaireeodell (talk) 15:16, 9 April 2022 (UTC)Reply
