I recall that when I saw this at the Castro Theatre, it had far more narration and music than the DVD version. Are there several cuts?

Apparently there are! On a 89min (the audio sounds slightly off, so it might not really be 89min) “Pathé” version found on some French pirate website there are several cuts compared to the 95min “Canal+” version readily available on Youtube, the most noticable being:
