Yiddish should be: קנעהיניטש
editThe Yiddish should by as listed in all Jewish books קנעהיניטש pronounced with the Galician (Ukrainian) pronunciation Kny (rhyming with eye) Nintch, but read by Jews of other places as Kney (rhyming with hay) Nitch.
In jest, the Jews called the town Knaan Nischt - meaning: It is not the Land of Canaan. This is because the sound of the english word eye was often shortened to aah in the Galician Jewish pronunciation of Yiddish and Hebrew.
See the English translation of the Rohatyn (Russian pronunciation Rogatyn) Memorial Book, the only document pertaining to the scantly known Jewish history of the town, written by Arye Rebish of Tel Aviv. (JewishGen genealogy website) פשוט pashute ♫ (talk) 13:05, 2 December 2024 (UTC)
