Gikuyu orthography
editThere is some discrepancy in different sources regarding pronounciation of Gikuyu letters. In the wiki article, there are /ɸ θ ʃ ɲdʒ (nj)/ in table and for the first three there no spelling indicated. Here is a fuller table with "c" for /ʃ/, "b" for /β/, "th" for /ð/ and "nj" for /ɲɟ/. And accordingly there are no /ɸ θ ɲdʒ/. So what is more correct? --Koryakov Yuri (talk) 12:01, 26 September 2008 (UTC)
And the last question: what sound is indicated with "ch" like in Michuki or Achera? --Koryakov Yuri (talk) 12:07, 26 September 2008 (UTC)

Gikuyu or Kikuyu?
editWhat is the better English spelling for the name of this language?
The native name is Gĩkũyũ. Ethnologue says "Gikuyu". The famous writer Ngugi wa Thiong'o, who is known for making a point of writing in the language rather than in English, calls it "Gĩkũyũ" in his English books. Glottolog says "Kikuyu". The language codes ki and kik are clearly based on "Kikuyu".
So what is better? Is there a good reason for writing it with a K in English, or should English fully adopt that native name? (Though possibly without the diacritics.) Is there any historical or political controversy behind this?
I don't have a strong opinion myself, just sincerely wondering. --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 05:20, 30 March 2019 (UTC)
