Size problem?
editThis island cannot at the same time be between 70 and 300 meters long AND 700 meters long and 2.5 km² in area. Does anyone know the true size? 84.145.145.21 20:47, 16 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- You're not understanding the author correctly. I believe what is stated is the fluctuation in size as a result of the tide.
Note
editWhat is considered land is the area above average high tide, and that does not fluctuate. I found a sketch map of the island on page http://elibrary.unm.edu/sora/Condor/issues/v090n01/p0259-p0261.pdf, with scale, took measurements from it and gauged the area. That should be reasonably accurate. The 2.5 km2 were obviously totally wrong. I think someone can now take away the dispute flag, if there is agreement with this. Ratzer 13:30, 16 July 2005 (UTC)
- I've removed the "disputed" tag. The 2.5 km² tag is, as you say, totally wrong, but this figure, whenceëver it originally came, is repeated on a number of sites, witness [1], etc. Happily, this is an inaccuracy that WP clones will soon no longer be propagating. You'll see I've also added a map. I don't know how accurate the scale is, as I kind of "averaged" from several different sources, and it still seems to be in, at the very least, minor conflict with the text of the article. (There's no way to reconcile many of the discrepant measurements given, not only here, but elsewhere.) I think this article should mention the Sala-y-Gómez seamounts as well, and should probably mention the Scott Bank, approx. 1.25 km to the northeast, and rising to less than 25m below sea-level. In other words, it is another peak of the same seamount, just 50m lower. Incidentally, Ratzer, what are you using to view that .PDF? It keeps screwing up on me--it downloads supposedly just fine, but is consistently "corrupted". I'm using AcroRead7. Et tu? Tomer TALK 07:24, July 17, 2005 (UTC)
Sala y Gomez PDF document
editFor me, the old version of Acrobat Reader 5.0 does the job. If you have trouble, go to page http://elibrary.unm.edu/sora/Condor/issues/v090n01/ first, look for "Sala" on that page and klick on the PDF link. Ratzer 15:59, 17 July 2005 (UTC)
Reorg?
editAnyone wanna tackle reorganizing the article, now that we've got the facts straightened out and gotten some additional text put together? I'm thinking there's enough to justify sections on at least ==Flora & Fauna==, ==Geology==, etc., and possibly ==History==. In any case, I'm thinking the discussion of after whom the island was named should go closer to the beginning of the article. My proposal:
- Opening/Intro
- History
- Description
- Geology
- Flora & Fauna
- See also
- External links
If nobody takes it up, maybe I'll get to it this afternoon...meanwhile, I'd appreciate any comments. Tomer TALK 16:33, July 19, 2005 (UTC)
Where is Isla Sala y Gómez located at?
- 26°27′S 105°28′W / 26.450°S 105.467°W
- Source: These geographical coordinates have been part of the article Isla Sala y Gómez since the article was created. First, they were not in the Coor-Template format. The edit http://en.wiki.x.io/w/index.php?title=Isla_Sala_y_G%C3%B3mez&diff=18828585&oldid=18463514 converted them into the official Coor-Template without changing their values. These geographical coordinates have been unchanged since.
- My source for these coordinates was de:Sala y Gómez. I regard this as less authorative than the other sources which you have used. Warofdreams talk 09:43, 11 October 2005 (UTC)

The article should be moved to Sala y Gómez, Sala y Gómez Island or Isla Sala y Gómez. The official name is "Sala..." not "Salas..." according to the Chilean law. Here are the decree DFL-2 creating the Provinces of Chile (it says Provincia de Isla de Pascua: Comprende las islas de Pascua y de Sala y Gómez) and the law Nº 16.441 creating the Department of Easter Island (it says el que comprenderá los territorios de las islas de Pascua y de Sala y Gómez). --B1mbo (talk) 01:46, 1 July 2008 (UTC)
- Easy there. There is no official name for this island, or for any place in Chile. According to this document, the Military Geographic Institute (IGM) does not have the power to name Chilean locations, nor does any other institution. Therefore, given that there is no authority sanctioning official names, we should use the ones most frequently utilized by State institutions in official documents. Here's a list of official documents giving different names for the island:
- Isla Salas y Gómez
- Military Geographic Institute:
- Guía Rutera IGM (IV Región)
- National Institute of Statistics:
- Chile: Ciudades, Pueblos, Aldeas y Caseríos 2005 (p. 87)
- Compendio Estadístico 2005 (pp. 54-55)
- Chilean Navy
- Military Geographic Institute:
- Isla Sala y Gómez
- National Congress Library:
- Note: The National Congress Library states on its web site that the documents offered should not be considered official, as only those published in the Diario Oficial are official. Thus, these are not realiable as they may contain typos, etc.
- National Congress Library:
- As we can see, Isla Salas y Gómez is the only name used in reliable official documents (that I could find).
- Even on Google Isla Salas y Gómez is 3.5 times more popular than Isla Sala y Gómez in Chilean web pages.

A question of the difference
editSalas y Gómez is said to be located 390 km east-northeast of Easter Island, but Easter Island lies according to this same article 415 km further west. Mhm... Uka (talk) 19:25, 17 February 2009 (UTC)
