Sri Lanka or Ceylon

edit

He was born in 1939, in Ceylon. He migrated to Australia in 1948, at age 9. In 1972, no less than 24 years after he migrated, his old country Ceylon changed its name to Sri Lanka. Why is it appropriate to say that he was born in Sri Lanka rather than Ceylon? What if Sri Lanka were to have another name change (to "Serendib", say) - would we then say that Prof de Kretser was born in Serendib? That seems a little absurd to me. We don't retrospectively change Shostakovich's "Leningrad" Symphony" to "St Petersburg" Symphony. JackofOz 23:20, 21 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

I agree. It should say Ceylon. ludahai 魯大海 00:20, 25 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Removal of David Flint’s comment

edit

Re: this. I hold no brief for David Flint, but I think that his remarks were relevant to the topic of republicanism vs. monarchy, and to the topic of vice-regal representatives not involving themselves in partisan issues. True, Flint is considered “disgraced” in some people’s eyes through his former involvement as head of the ABA/ACMA, but he was speaking here purely in his capacity as convenor of Australians for Constitutional Monarchy, a completely different hat, and one that he still wears. But it does need a citation. -- JackofOz (talk) 23:55, 24 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
