Thanks, Zora, was just about to do a stub, but you beat me to it, and were very thorough to boot. I added some bits (more on pattern darning to come) and also incorporated the darning mushroom/darning egg stub here. I have some PD illustrations, will dig those out as well. Just under tools, my mother has a darning gourd. These are dried out gourds that are pair shaped with the top cut off and the inside hollowed out. They would work the same as the egg or the mushroom i.e. they are used to stretch the fabric over and keep it taut while darning.

does something need to be said on darning needles?

Sock darning

my impression is that when you darn a sock, you do not really "weave" thread over the hole as a form of patch, but rather simply use stitches to draw the edges together and close the hole. Since socks are stretchy, this does not create a problem. But then my rather limited experience with darning may include non-standard techniques.Wschart (talk) 12:54, 1 June 2011 (UTC)

Machine darning - citation problem

Machine darning is cited to the Dictionary of Needlework - so far, so good. But here in the article there's a claim that machine darning is inferior to that done by hand, while the source makes no mention of inferiority at all. In fact the source author takes care to state that machine darning is bona fide darning and not an imitation. Anecdotally, I can confirm that machine darning is vastly superior to my own hand-work. :) So the sentence probably needs rewriting. TooManyFingers (talk) 19:07, 16 August 2021 (UTC)
