Purported naming after George Mifflin Dallas

edit

I find that this statement in the lead to be improbable & unverifiable: "The county ... was possibly named for George Mifflin Dallas, the 11th Vice President of the United States under U.S. President James K. Polk."

Dallas#History states "John Neely Bryan established a permanent settlement near the Trinity River named Dallas in 1841." George Mifflin Dallas did not become the U.S. Vice President until March 4, 1845. Therefore it is unlikely that it was named for him as an honor to being Vice President, as the naming antedated his term in office. It is just as likely that Dallas was named after Alexander J. Dallas (statesman), his father, or Alexander J. Dallas (United States Navy officer), his brother, or yet another source. Peaceray (talk) 20:53, 21 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
