NIELIT is actively engaged in Capacity Building and Skill Development in the areas of IECT such as Artificial Intelligence, Blockchain, Cyber Security and Forensics, Cloud Computing, IoT, ESDM and related verticals. It offers courses in Degree/Diploma Levels as well as Skilling Courses and is also one of the National Examination & Accreditation Body which accredits institutes/ organizations for the conduct of courses in the Non-Formal Sector.
On 15th July, 2024, The Ministry of Education, Govt. of India on the advice of University Grant Commission has issued notification declaring NIELIT Ropar with its 11 constituent units - Aizawl, Agartala, Aurangabad, Calicut, Gorakhpur, Imphal, Kohima, Patna, Srinagar, Kekri & Itanagar as an Institution Deemed to be University. NIELIT Deemed to be University is offering Ph.D., Master & Bachelor Degree Courses in various Technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, Data Engineering, Cyber Forensics, Automotive Electronics, IoT & Sensor Systems, VLSI Design, Embedded Systems etc. [1][2]
History
editEstablished in 1994 as DOEACC, a joint initiative by the All-India Council for Technical Education and the Department of Information & Technology, the organization initially focused on providing computer courses in the non-formal IT education sector. In 2002, DOEACC expanded significantly by merging several CEDTI and RCC centers, becoming a national-level entity. In 2011, DOEACC was renamed NIELIT.
Overview
editNIELIT is functioning under the overall control and guidance of the Governing Council. The hon’ble Union minister for Electronics and Information Technology is the Chairperson of the Council whereas Hon'ble Union Minister of State for Electronics & IT is the Deputy Chairperson along with members from Government, Industry, Academia and representatives of various professional bodies.
NIELIT has its presence at fifty-six (56) locations at Agartala, Aizawl, Ajmer, Aurangabad, Balasore, Bhubaneswar, Bikaner, Buxar, Calicut, Chandigarh, Chennai, Chitradurga, Chuchuyimlang, Churachandpur, Daman, Delhi, East Delhi, South West Delhi, Dibrugarh, Dimapur, Gangtok, Gorakhpur, Guwahati, Haridwar, Hyderabad, Imphal, Itanagar, Jammu, Jorhat, Kargil, Kohima, Kolkata, Kokrajhar, Kurukshetra, Leh, Lucknow, Lunglei, Majuli, Mandi, Muzaffarpur, Noida, Pasighat, Patna, Pali, Pilibhit, Ranchi, Ropar, Senapati, Shillong, Shimla, Silchar, Srinagar, Tezpur, Tirupati, Tura and Tezu with its Headquarters at New Delhi.
Besides the 56 Own Centres, NIELIT is also well networked through about 700+ Accredited Training Institutions for training of O/A/B/C level courses and through a network of about 9000+ Facilitation Centres engaged in training of Digital Competency Courses making NIELIT distinctly positioned in terms of its outreach to all corners of the country and all segments of the society. NIELIT also grants accreditation to training institutes for conducting its NSQF aligned Short Term Courses and CHMT-O Level Course.
NIELIT has been recognised by NCVET as its Awarding Body & Assessment Agency to award certificates to trainees for NCVET approved qualification. NIELIT has also won DSCI Excellence Awards 2022 in Excellence in Capacity Building in Cyber Crimes, Cyber Laws & Digital Forensics by Academia and secured runner-up position in 2023 and Finalist in 2024 in the same category.
Spectrum of Courses
editNIELIT plays an important role in skilling of youth in the area of IECT. The wide repertoire of NIELIT Courses includes: (i) Degree/Diploma Level Courses such as M.Tech, B.Tech, MCA, BCA programmes offered by the NIELIT Centres in association with State Universities/Technical Board; Aurangabad Centre is also facilitating PhD Program in the area of Electronics (ii) Skilling Courses (Long Term) such as O Level (IT), A Level (IT), CHMT-O Level, etc.; (iii) Skilling Courses (Short Term) in niche areas such as loT, Cloud Computing, Machine Learning, Cyber Security Al, etc. and (iv) Digital Competency Programmes for the proliferation of Digital Proficiency in the country; besides specialized programmes in emerging technologies targeted towards empowering the employees of the State Governments and Departments of Central Line Ministries. In addition, NIELIT has also created expertise for the roll out of customized skilling, upskilling and reskilling programmes as per specific needs of youths and industries.
NIELIT has created expertise for the roll out of customised skill development programmes as per specific needs of various public and private sector firms in emerging technologies. Various courses of NIELIT have been aligned with nationally integrated education and competency-based skill frame work NSQF. NIELIT offers these courses through its own campuses and various NSQF Accredited Institutes spread across India. As of now, 124 Courses of NIELIT have been NSQF aligned from Level 3 to 8.
In the last 5 years, NIELIT has trained/certified more than 40 lakhs candidates with an average of 7 to 8 lakhs training figures per year. NIELIT envisages to create a pool of one crore skilled manpower in next 5 years.
Examinations by NIELIT
editNIELIT serves as a National Examination Body and has successfully conducted over 1.04 crore online examinations and 50+ lakh offline examinations. In addition to its own recruitment exams, NIELIT has organized examinations for several government organizations, including MeitY, ICERT, NIC, SAMEER, NTRO, CCRH, STPI, BOAT, CPWD, and others. It also facilitates third-party online examinations with on-site proctoring and centralized monitoring systems. Furthermore, NIELIT accredits institutes and organizations to conduct IT and Electronics courses in the non-formal sector, contributing to skill development across the country.

editNIELIT has been conducting training for various Government departments viz. Directorate General Resettlement (DGR), Border Security Force (BSF), Reserve Bank of India (RBI), Army Educational Corps (AEC), National Security Guard (NSG), Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Software Technology Parks of India (STPI), Assam Police, Government School Teachers, National Academy Of Broadcasting And Multimedia (NABM), etc.
Emerging Technologies
editNIELIT is at the forefront of building a skilled and future-ready workforce through the FutureSkills PRIME initiative. This national project focuses on creating a robust ecosystem for upskilling and reskilling in emerging and futuristic technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, Blockchain, Internet of Things (IoT), and Additive Manufacturing.
Under this initiative, NIELIT serves as a key implementing agency, driving innovation and capacity building. NIELIT Centres are designated as Lead or Co-Lead Resource Centres (RCs) across 10 core areas of emerging technologies. Among them, NIELIT Calicut, NIELIT Kolkata, and NIELIT Aurangabad are Lead Resource Centres for 3D Printing/Additive Manufacturing, Blockchain Technology, and Robotics Process Automation, respectively. Additionally, 14 other NIELIT Centres contribute as Co-Lead Resource Centres, further expanding the reach of this transformative program.
Through FutureSkills PRIME, NIELIT is empowering professionals and organizations to navigate the evolving technological landscape with confidence. International Collaboration
editNIELIT is actively engaged in international collaborations, offering training and technical support worldwide. It has signed a service agreement with the Ministry of ICIT, Tanzania, for training initiatives and partnered with ITI, Egypt, for specialized training in Cyber Security, Chip Designing, and 3D Printing. Collaborations with III, Taiwan, have facilitated training for Indian officials, while joint programs with GmbH, EU focus on job matching and certificate equivalency. Under MEA's Mekong Ganga Cooperation, NIELIT conducts training in Thailand, Cambodia, Myanmar, Vietnam, and Laos. Partnerships with IPA, Japan, and KSF, Korea, enable mutual recognition of IT qualifications, while agreements with SCS, Singapore, equate NIELIT’s certifications with SCS’s IT qualifications. Additionally, NIELIT collaborates with UNESCO on ethical AI and promotes global capacity-building and policy advocacy.
