Maryland Railroad Trophy

edit

The origin of the Maryland Railroad Lantern Trophy is traced back to Vincent Chesney, a alumni of McDaniel College. He recognized the history of the rivalry that lacked a trophy and wanted to honor that rivalry as his brother Bob Chesney was associate head coach at Johns Hopkins. It was also his hope to inspire the McDaniel football team, which had not beat Hopkins in several years. The trophy was first awarded in 2009 and every year since has been retained by Hopkins.

Chesney designed the trophy as a railroad lantern due to both schools’ connection to railroads and light. McDaniel College was founded in 1867 as Western Maryland College because the college’s first Board president was also the president of the Western Maryland Railroad. Johns Hopkins’ wealth from his Baltimore and Ohio Railroad stock fueled his philanthropic donations, including the development of his namesake university. McDaniel’s motto is, “E Tenebris in Lucem Voco” 1 Peter 2:9 and Johns Hopkins’ motto is “Veritas vos liberabit” John 8:32, both of which deal with light, truth and movement.

History

edit

For many decades the best college football team in Maryland would get a trophy. Up until 1942 Maryland and Western Maryland were the biggest rivalry in the state. After World War II, Western Maryland college decided to no longer play against larger schools and instead play what is considered to be its “natural rivals.” In 1947, Western Maryland and Johns Hopkins began the tradition of having the last game of the regular season be played against each other. Starting in 1946 both schools joined the Mason–Dixon Conference have always continued to be in the same conference together for football.

2012 Senior Record

edit

This year's Johns Hopkins seniors entered the game with a record of 36-8 over their four years at the school. The win lifted them over the record set by the 2005 and 2011 seniors. In addition, those JHU seniors are tied for the second-most wins by any senior class in Centennial Conference history. Only the 2000 seniors at McDaniel, who compiled a 41-5 record during their career, have won more games than JHU's 2011 seniors.
