G'day. Is it just me, or is it really hard to see what group goes where because of the intense similarity of colors? I don't know if different colors are used in the legend, or if it's just an opital illusion, but I have no idea (except through using common sense) whether the non-IE languages spoken in South America are Eskimo-Aleut, Isolate or Tai-Kadai—I expect they're actually American Indian, but the colors look wildly different! Could we perhaps use one with much better contrast? I know there's the ‘original’, but it contains perhaps too much information. A compromise would be nice: major family groups, but fully contrasting colors. Would anyone object?

(I know this is called ‘wikipedia colors’, but I think if someone's going to argue that we should be using the wikipedia colors in this map, then that means we should change the wikipedia colors (and the map) so that the map is useful.)

Hainan and Taiwan

What happened to Hainan and Taiwan? Do they speak Khoisan or something...? The yellowish parts should be Sino-Tibetan. -- ran (talk) 06:24, 5 November 2005 (UTC)

i think it would be nice if it were in one place. i think that having it at the commons site is the way people are doing things. i dont know about archiving the previous versions — perhaps we should post a question. additionally, i think we should put up a separate version of the map without labels so that the map can be relabeled in different languages. i have some a couple of color suggestions that i will type below. peace – ishwar  (speak) 09:26, 10 November 2005 (UTC)

color

hi. i have 2 suggestions concerning the current colors which i will also post on the languages wikiproject page.

1. Austronesian color could be a little darker so that it contrasts a little more with the white background on those small islands. (maybe too much trouble?)
2. the little specks of languages on US reservations are difficult to see & will remain difficult to see no what matter what we do. however, perhaps they can be brought out a little more by changing the color of the Native American languages group?

My overwhelming concern is to remain consistant with Wikiproject Languages, so I think any color scheme change should be proposed there first. The two issues you state don't especially bother me, but I would like to have a color for the Quechuan languages. I think native american (and non-pama-nyungan australian, and papuan) languages that don't have well-established families should be marked as isolates or "small families" - the idea of this map should be to give an impression of the extent of the largest and least controversial language families, not sprachbunds. --April Arcus 16:07, 10 November 2005 (UTC)
