The horse-shoer thensaid that he knew the bird very well; he had seen it whenit sat in its cage in another kings palace, and if it did notsing now it must be because it did not have all that itwanted. He himself knew so much about the birdsways that if he only got to see it he could tell at oncewhat it lacked. The kings men now took counsel whether they oughtto take the stranger in before the king, for in his chambersat the bird Grip along with the weeping princess. Itwas decided to risk doing so, and the horse-shoer was ledinto the kings chamber, where he had no sooner calledthe bird by its name than it began to sing and theprincess to smile. Then the darkness cleared awayfrom the kings eyes, and the more the bird sang 142 TEE BIRD GRIP the more clearly did he see, till at last in the strangehorse-shoer he recognised his youngest son. Then theprincess told the king how treacherously his eldest sonshad acted, and he had them banished from his kingdom;
