Summary

Description
English: The Shearers This line of stones is locally thought to be an alignment of standing stones with the name referring to a traditional tale of their origin as sheep shearers punished for working on the sabbath http://www.themodernantiquarian.com/site/5687/shearers.html

The more prosaic archaeologists of RCAHMS considered that they were more likely to be the larger remaining stones of an ancient field dyke, probably erected during the occupation of the nearby Iron Age settelement at Hownam Rings http://canmore.rcahms.gov.uk/en/site/57965/details/the+shearers/

The archaeology view is supported by the close alignment of the stone row with the prehistoric ridge and furrow system (cord rig) visible (on aerial photos) on both its north and south sides.
