English: Sydney Burdekin (b 1839 - d 1899) Alderman for Macquarie Ward, 1 December 1883 to 30 November 1898. He was a rack renter. Burdekin was Mayor in 1890 until 7 April 1891 when he resigned. He was elected MLA for Tamworth, 1880-1882; for East Sydney, 1884-1891; and for the Hawkesbury, 1892-1894. An avid supporter of the free trade movement, he was identified with the short-lived Free Trade and Liberal Association formed in 1889 and a strong opponent of a property tax. He served as director of the Sydney Hospital in 1878-1899 and was a member of the Aborigines Protection Board in 1887-1899. He became a magistrate in 1885 and presided over the Royal Commission on the City and Suburban Railways in 1890-1891. Burdekin was born on 18 February 1839 and died on 17 December 1899.
