Short History of Mizos: The Mongolians are divided into three main groups ;- (1) Tibet-Myanmar(Tibeto-Burman), (2) Thai-Chinese and (3) Mon-Khmer(Mun Khama). The Mizos belongs to the sub-group called Chin/Kachin under the main group of Tibet-Myanmar. Different clans and groups of people migrated from Myanmar towards the present Mizoram at different times around 1600 AD. These groups of people set up villages on the hills and each village was governed by the village chiefs and his elders. The Chiefs were at war with each other in order to retain land for their own jhum cultivation and hunting grounds and also for the wars, they settled on hilltops whre there was a good look-out for invaders. A good Chief with his brave warriors was a calm reassurance for his citizens and accumulate more people under his wings. Sahlam: There's one Sahlam at the Chawngtlai Village.This Sahlam was chief Nikual's Sahlam, they hunged 19 enemies head here. If a person was killed by the enemy, revenge must be taken out. Because, if not, the departed soul would not rest peacefully in the underworld. This mostly resulted in raids and wars. Sometimes, the warriors would even kill women and children apart from the enemy warriors. They cut off their heads as hunting trophies.

When the successful warriors return home, they recite war cries at a place near their village where their fellow community members could surely hear. The people at home welcome the warriors with rice beer and fanfare. The warriros, children,the women and the old people hit the enemy heads with vengeance and performed war dance around them. The hunting trophies would then be hung on trees at the entrance of their village. The tree where they hung these heads is called Sahlam. When the Bristish, already ruling over India, heard about these head hunting tribes, they sent out troops to invade and stop the savage practice. The Mizo Chiefs who had no modern weapons and no match for the British Army were defeated and became a part of the colony at around 1890. Then came the Christian Missionaries in the year 1894 to cultivate the seeds of Christianity and gave them the alphabet. Thanks to them, the Mizos stopped their pagan practices and embraced Christianity.
