Description

Leeds School of Medicine, Thoresby Place, Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. It was designed by William Henry Thorp (born 1852), founded in 1890, and completed in 1894. All the original stone carving on the exterior, and the original wood carving inside, was executed by John Wormald Appleyard (1831-1894). Showing a grotesque, possibly a self-portrait of Appleyard.

Note: The grotesques on this building are intended to recall Romanesque carvings. However they are distinctly Victorian. Note the attention given to muscular anatomy in the limbs, and the relaxed attitude of the joints, giving an effect of grace and power. Some of these grotesques carry the attributes of a medical student, such as a pestle and mortar, or a book.
