Summary
editThis image depicts the evolution of the Parker Brothers/Hasbro trademark for the board game Monopoly into a brand, which began in the 1980s and accelerated under Hasbro's ownership in the 1990s. Depicted are twelve model cars, produced under the Johnny Lightning brand name by Playing Mantis, Inc. Alongside the cars are their included replicas, designed to be Monopoly game tokens. At center is a game token version of the Volkswagen New Beetle, which was part of a promotion involving the other model cars, originally sold individually. All of the model cars rest upon a blue T-shirt, bearing the Monopoly logo.
Photograph taken by John D. Buell on 22 August 2006. Monopoly logo, artwork and design elements are trademarked by or have a copyright held by Hasbro. Model car designs are copyright Playing Mantis, Inc., and are licensed from the original car manufacturers.
Fair use rationale
editThis image is used solely in the article History of the board game Monopoly to illustrate the evolution of the game's logo and design elements into a brand. It is not believed that the display of this logo and artwork, in an original photograph, will infringe upon the copyright holders of the model car designs (Playing Mantis, Inc.) or the game's manufacturer (Parker Brothers/Hasbro). It is further not believed that such use in the article named will damage any of the named companies' abilities to sell their products, or protect their trademarks or copyrights, as the photograph is being used for educational and informative purposes only. The artwork and logos are also displayed at a low resolution, using an inferior graphics format (JPEG), which would hinder attempts at commercial reuse.
