Summary

Description

Arms of the Scottish Fleming family (Earl of Wigtown, cr 1341 & 1606, the earls of the second creation bore the subsidiary titles of Lord Fleming and Cumbernauld (1606) and of Lord Fleming (1451, Peerage of Scotland, extinct 1747, all in the Peerage of Scotland). As depicted, possibly incorrectly, on a 16th century painting inscribed "Lorde Fleminge" see below and . Blazon as depicted here, possibly incorrectly: Or, a chevron within a double tressure flory counter-flory gules. (Source: Burke's General Armory, where the arms are given with field gules and charges argent, see .[1]). The double tressure flory counter-flory is a distinct feature of Scottish heraldry, and thus rules out these arms as relating to the Irish Flemings, Barons Slane, descended from Fleming of Bratton Fleming in Devon. 16th c. painting source: [2] University of Manchester, Rylands Collection, Image Number: JRL060418cb; Image Title: Lorde Fleminge coat of arms; Parent Work Title:
