From the Newcastle Libraries: "Picture has been framed with an arch at the top and a bar at the bottom. The ship is at sea travelling at speed under steam power. Several of the crew are visible on deck. Blanco Encaladana Chilian ironclad warship. Built at Goole by Earl's Shipbuilding Company in1874; reconditioned at Elswick by Armstrong Mitchell and Company. It was torpedoed and sunk during the Chilean civil war 1891 one of the first warships to be sunk this way. |
