Itstarted with the opening of the curtains on the sound proofstage for the purpose of attracting the attention of the listeners.At this point they were told to be sure to keep a receiver toeach ear; that if they shared earphones they would find them-selves, in effect, deaf in one ear. Following these preliminary instructions, the curtains wereclosed and most of the illusions were put on with the demon-strator out of sight of his audience. A voice would say, Well,I guess Ill go down and put some coal on the fire, or Itstime to go up on the roof and feed the pigeons. Immediatelyafter, the sound of a closing door could be heard; apparentlythe demonstrator had left the stage. For a moment it wouldbe silent, and then a voice whispered directly into the left carof the listener, I beg your pardon, did you drop this? ; andthen perhaps in the right ear,
