Summary

Description
English: Yaowarat road is one of the first eighteen extended through the heart of the capital city in the reign of King Rama V. It took 8 years (1891-1900) for completion. This road was originally named “Yupparat”, and later changed to “Yaowarat”. With a total distance of approximately one kilometre, this road extends from the canal encircling the city, across from Maha Chai fortress, southwards and meets up with Rachawong road which was constructed in addition to Charoen Krung road straight to a bank of the Chao Phraya River (Rachawong Pier).

Initially, this road was home to Chinese immigrants. King Rama V designated the area for a trade hub of commodities imported from China along with nightclubs, and gold shops. The first tallest building ever constructed is also in this area.

Yaowarat road was nicknamed the “Dragon Road” where the Royal Jubilee Gate nearby the Odean Circle is the head, the area of old Yaowarat market is the centre, and the very end of the road is the tip of the tail. At present, this area is one of the busiest locations. This area was also labelled the “Chinatown of Thailand”.
