Summary

Description
English: Portrait of Apolinario Mabini y Maranan (23 July 1864-13 May 1903), a Filipino lawyer, educator, theoretician, revolutionary leader, and politician. He served as the legal and constitutional adviser to the Revolutionary Government of the Philippines. He also served as Prime Minister of the First Philippine Republic, and as an adviser to Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo, the President of the Republic. Mabini was born in Barrio Talaga, Tanauan, Batangas, Philippines on 23 July 1864. His father, Inocencio Leon Mabini y Lira, was an illiterate farmer and his mother, Dionisia Maranan y Magpantay, was a vendor in the Tanauan market. He was the second of eight children. Despite being born into a very poor peasant native family and often not being able to maintain decent funds for his studies, Mabini was able to obtain his formal education through various scholarships grants. These conditions were in drastic contrast to the typical background of formally educated people in the Philippines at the time during Spanish rule. In 1881 at age 17, he enrolled at the Colegio de San Juan de Letran, where he endured ridicule from his classmates for his shabby clothing, but earned the respect of his professors with his brilliant mind. Here, his studies were periodically interrupted by a chronic lack of funds, and he earned money for his board and lodging by teaching children. In 1887, through a government examination, he earned the degree of Bachelor of Arts with highest honours and a Teacher’s Certificate with the title, “Profesor de Segunda Enseñanza”. He was able to obtain his law degree in 1894 from the Royal and Pontifical University of Santo Tomas in Manila.
