Description
English: Aircraft of the Royal Air Force 1939-1945- Handley Page Hp.57 Halifax.
Handley Page Halifax B Mark II Series 1A, LW263 'EY-E', of No. 78 Squadron RAF based at Breighton, Yorkshire, in flight fitted with rectangular tail fins, which were introduced to cure the rudder-stalling experienced under certain conditions with the original triangular fin. Five days after this photograph was taken, LW263 was lost on returning from a raid on Bochum, when the crew were unable to pin-point their position over Lincolnshire. The aircraft stalled as the pilot tried to avoid a factory chimney, and crashed into a wooded area on the Foxhill Road near Scunthorpe. None of the crew survived.

This tag is designed for use where there may be a need to assert that any enhancements (eg brightness, contrast, colour-matching, sharpening) are in themselves insufficiently creative to generate a new copyright. It can be used where it is unknown whether any enhancements have been made, as well as when the enhancements are clear but insufficient. For known raw unenhanced scans you can use an appropriate {{PD-old}} tag instead. For usage, see Commons:When to use the PD-scan tag.

Note: This tag applies to scans and photocopies only. For photographs of public domain originals taken from afar, {{PD-Art}} may be applicable. See Commons:When to use the PD-Art tag.
