This category is somewhat misguidingly named. Intended are historical individuals who were "fencers" (not "Germans who practice historical fencing", as "historical fencing" refers to historical systems practiced as reconstruction); note that there was no German term for "fencing" prior to the mid 16th century at least; the term Fechter before that time literally translates to "fighter", i.e. "practitioner of the fighting arts", not limited to combat with bladed weapons.
The category "historical fencing" otoh is intended as limited to historical systems of combat with bladed weapons. Masters and practitioners of the German school of fencing even predating the 16th century may be listed here, but the above caveats must be understood and it may be better to also include them in the generic Category:Historical European martial arts.
