Wikipedia:WikiProject New Zealand/Pasifika Arts Aotearoa
This is the project page to improve content of New Zealand Aotearoa based Pasifika Arts. The goal is to increase biographies in Wikipedia, Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons with a target of 50% new articles being women or non-binary folk.
New resource
editA new book has been published called Pacific Art Aotearoa (2023) edited by Lana Lopesi which is a valuable resource for information with contributions from more than 120 artists, curators and community voices. It was published in association with Creative New Zealand Toi Aotearoa as part of the Pacific Arts Legacy Project from the Pacific Arts Strategy.[1]

About the project
editIn 2021 Lisa Maule (Pakoire (talk)) was funded by the Wikimedia Foundation to run the Performing Arts Aotearoa Wikiproject, and this project built from that in 2022, but seeking emerging Pasifika editors to explore possibilities of Wikipedia. Lisa is Pākehā, of Scottish and English descent from Wellington, Aotearoa with a background in performing arts and events. You can email queries about the project to: lisamaule.info@gmail.com
In 2023 the project has a new coordinator, Kasi Valu who is taking it to new heights including the attendance at Wikimania Singapore of six Pasfika artists and editors.
Creative New Zealand Residency
editThe Pasifika Arts Aotearoa Wikiproject included a pilot residency component (Wikipedian in Residence) with Creative New Zealand that started in December 2021 and finished on 24 April 2022.
- Working with Wikimedia Foundation and through its Pacific Arts Wikipedian in Residency pilot, Creative New Zealand aims to amplify globally the profile of its Arts Pasifika Award winners and other notable Pasifika artists, increasing knowledge of their creative careers and the valuable contribution they make to Aotearoa New Zealand.
- Through the Pacific Arts Wikipedian in Residency pilot, Creative New Zealand is supporting three Pasifika artists to become Wikipedia editors, documenting the stories of its Arts Pasifika Award winners and other notable Pasifika artists, while also building and developing capability through their increased knowledge and skills, and shared professional development.
- The residency contributes to Creative New Zealand’s work to develop ‘Tagata’ arts leadership, a strategic focus of its Pacific Arts Strategy 2018-2023, and is part of its #DigitalMoana response to the impacts of COVID-19.
Outcomes of the residency
editThe Creative New Zealand residency in 2022 created 20 new articles with ten of these being created beyond start class by the three editors new to Wikipedia. The three residents also improved 13 Wikipedia articles, created and expanded 19 Wikidata items and uploaded 4 images to Wikimedia Commons. There was an outreach target and between them the residents attended a number of New Zealand-based Wikipedia group meetings and one secured a sponsored place to the New Zealand Digital Forum, representing the project to GLAM workers. Each resident spoke to practitioners within the Pasifika Arts community in Aotearoa about their learning and the goals of the project.
Some reflections from the editors:
Looking deeper into the future I hope we begin to build frameworks outside of Wikipedia, a database that best reflects our lens and cultural practices that is true to the way we catalogue information from our ancestral practices deeply rooted in oratory.[2]
I am an avid user of Wikipedia, and most of my reading has been through music and film deep dives over the years so it's nice to experience Wikipedia from this perspective as a contributor.[2]
Wikimania Singapore 2023 - Aotearoa Pasifika performance
editSome emerging Pasifika Wikimedians presented at Wikimania Singapore 2023 in the Entertainment programme.
A cutting edge showcase that wove multiple disciplines within Pacific arts. As proud descendants of Te Moana Nui-A-Kiwa, a group of young artists from Aotearoa, New Zealand, illustrated the distinct voices of Tonga, Samoa, and Niue, through traditional and contemporary visuals, movement and song at Wikimania Singapore 2023

Suggested articles needing creation or improvement
editPasifika Arts Aotearoa in this project is broadly defined as fine arts, crafts, music, dance, theatre, inter-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary arts by Pasifika heritage artists based in Aotearoa. The Creative New Zealand Arts Pasifika Awards have been running since the early 2000's, and when this project was proposed in October 2021 over half of the notable winners don't have Wikipedia articles. Arts Pasifika Award winners and people in the Pacific Arts Legacy Project in Pantograph Punch are the starting place for suggested articles. The Pacific Island Legacy project is curated by Lana Lopesi and includes notable artists from many disciplines.
