Proposed deletion of Newsstand (Apple)

edit

The article Newsstand (Apple) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

A violation of WP:CRYSTAL until more information becomes available closed to the public launch of iOS 5.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. ninety:one (reply on my talk) 23:33, 19 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

auto lang box

edit

Hi Nicky,

I've often thought of automating the taxonomy. Would save on maintenance. But AFAIK there have been concerns over server load with the bio boxes. Are you familiar with the issues? I think we'd probably want to verify it wouldn't cause any problems before putting time into s.t. like this.

Also, we could omit intermediate levels. Many nodes are rather uncertain, so they wouldn't be of much value except for their immediate descendents. And in many cases, when you end up with a familiar node like Bantu or Polynesian, we really don't need twenty nodes above it in every single article. We might want to have a list of language 'genera', which would automate any levels above, and from that point down it could be manual. Unless we really want to code in 7,000 ISO languages (and hundreds more w/o ISO support), which would be an awful lot of work. — kwami (talk) 04:57, 7 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Sorry, I'm actually not all too familiar with the issues surrounding the bio boxes yet–not to say I couldn't be, I consider myself okay with parser functions. Would you mind linking to a discussion about them? I may not be completely informed on how to do it, but I am interested in the project. Do you think it would be possible to simply have a bot help in coding in the languages, or would a script not be able to handle the hierarchy? I think a 'genera'-down system would be fine (it's still faster to fill in half of them then all). —Airhogs777 (complaintsevidencejob) @WikiShrek 22:10, 7 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
I've been trying to get a stub article on at least one language for every genus, so you don't have to write it out, just copy it from a sister language. I'm just about there, except for Austronesian. But updating classifications manually is a bitch.
Don't remember where the discussions were. You could probably find them as easily as I could.
Yes, a bot could do it. Maybe better to use AWB so that we could verify as we went along that we weren't introducing any errors. — kwami (talk) 22:38, 7 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
I've done some research into how the taxobox, and I think I sorta get how it works more than I did before. I don't know if there really has to be an article for everything–the bio-box uses template subpages, which I think would be better than hiding a bunch of data in the article about each genus (if that's what you were implying).
Also, before we start actually doing anything, we should probably... I don't know... get together with a WikiProject or form a task force or something. I don't know where I was going with that thought. —Airhogs777 (complaintsevidencejob) @WikiShrek 05:01, 9 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
Probably not an actual Wikiproject, but a task for the languages project, maybe. The more chefs the better in this case, I think.
No, that's not what I was implying. I've been trying to write up a stub for at least one language in every genus. That way a skeletal system is in place. Otherwise people just copy out of Ethnologue, which is worthless in a lot of cases. (Well, I copy out the ISO codes and population figures, but not the scope of the language or its classification. The scope is often arbitrary, but we often have better sources for classification.) — kwami (talk) 02:53, 10 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
So then, are you going to request a new task force? It looks like you're pretty influential in the WP language community. I'm not... so it would be better if you were the one who requested it. —Airhogs777 (complaintsevidencejob) @WikiShrek
I've brought it up before, and didn't get much response. The project doesn't seem to be terribly active. (Except I think I did get an adviso about server-support issues. I don't remember what it was, and in any case it may not be a problem any longer.) I think it would probably be more productive if you presented a plan, and asked what people thought. After people have time to respond (or not, as will probably be the case), then maybe present an example of the kind of coding you're thinking of. Probably a good idea at that point to let the template & coding people know, so we don't put a lot of energy into s.t. that gets shot down for maintenance reasons. Then maybe make a test template and use it on a few sample articles. If we get no response, at least people can't complain we're taking over. If we do get responses, they'll probably be helpful.
I don't know if we need a new template, though. I was thinking of just adding parameters to the existing one. There could be an if statement: if there's a "genus" (or whatever) parameter, then it calls the family tree at that location, and sets a number for fam-x, where x is the number of levels in the tree. Then further manual encoding could either be "gen2" or "fam-a", where a is taken as x+1, "fam-b" where b is x+2, etc. If there is no genus parameter, then we have the old system. Do you think s.t. like that might work, or do you have other ideas? — kwami (talk) 03:33, 10 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Request reason:

I'm not sure why my IP or a range that contains it was blocked, but I consider myself to be an upstanding member of the community (not the best of users, but at least a respectful one). I've contributed regularly to the Wikipedia Trading Card Game and, maybe I've had a few trademark issues, but I've done my best to correctly tag all the photos I vectorize. I realize this doesn't mean anything, but I'm also an administrator and regular contributor to several Wikia wikis, including (but not limited to) WikiShrek, Community Central (where I can often be found on the chat helping other users with technical issues) and the SpongeBob SquarePants Wiki. The IP blocked is 67.6.128.0/18, and it looks like it was was only blocked for one month, but I'd still like to get back to editing. So if you don't mind, please unblock my IP so I can get contributing.

Accept reason:

IP block exempt

I have granted your account an exemption from IP blocking. This will allow you to edit through full blocks affecting your IP address when you are logged in.

Please read the page Wikipedia:IP block exemption carefully, especially the section on IP block exemption conditions.

Note in particular that you are not permitted to use this newly-granted right to edit Wikipedia via anonymous proxies, or disruptively. If you do, or there is a serious concern of abuse, then the right may be removed by any administrator.

Appropriate usage and compliance with the policy may be checked periodically, due to the nature of block exemption, and block exemption will be removed when no longer needed (for example, when the block it is related to expires).

I hope this will enhance your editing, and allow you to edit successfully and without disruption. Tiptoety talk 03:41, 21 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hi, I will request that a checkuser look into this and possibly grant you IP block exemption so you can continue editing. ABS-CBN

edit

Hi, I am just curious about the uploaded version of the logo of ABS-CBN Corporation here in Wikipedia because in actuality, the official corporate logo introduce in 2000 does not have a gray background/box as opposed to the version uploaded here. The box is just a common misconception because ABS-CBN (the network) uses the logo with a box only because it is difficult for the logo to be visible in the TV screen without the box. Could you please upload a version without the gray box to correct this issue. Thank you. ---HollycK TALK 22:43, 7 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

The version I uploaded was just based on the .PNG version available at the time I vectorized it. I removed the background, as requested. Thanks for notifying me, if you never need anything else feel free to ask.   —Airhogs777 TC WS 03:18, 9 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Please don't do that; templates cause all manner of potential problems if used in signatures and are subsequently dissallowed here (see WP:SIG#NT for details). You'll need to put the text in the field in your preferences directly, and if that doesn't fit, use something shorter.
