Welcome to the Arbitration Committee Clerk Team!

edit

Hi Hahc21. We have added you to the list of clerks and subscribed you to the mailing list (info: WP:AC/C#clerks-l). Welcome, and I look forward to working with you! To adjust your subscription options for the mailing list, see the link at mail:clerks-l. The mailing list works in the usual way, and the address to which new mailing list threads can be sent is clerks-l@lists.wikimedia.org. Useful reading for new clerks is the procedures page, WP:AC/C/P, but you will learn all the basic components of clerking on-the-job.

New clerks begin as a trainee, are listed as such at WP:AC/C#List of clerks, and will remain so until they have learned all the aspects of the job. When you've finished training, which usually takes a couple of/a few months, then we'll propose to the Committee that you be made a full clerk. As a clerk, you'll need to check your e-mail regularly, as the mailing list is where the clerks co-ordinate (on-wiki co-ordination page also exists but is not used nearly as much). If you've any questions at any point of your traineeship, simply post to the mailing list.

Lastly, it might be useful if you enter your timezone into WP:AC/C#List of clerks (in the same format as the other members have), so that we can estimate when we will have clerks available each day; this is, of course, at your discretion. Again, welcome! Regards, Lord Roem ~ (talk) 03:10, 15 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

Wow. Thank you! I will check the subscription options and do the modifications neded as soon as possible. Regards. — ΛΧΣ21 03:26, 15 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

Short GA

edit

Hey, do you think this article is too small to nominate for a GA? CorporateM (Talk) 11:53, 16 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

(talk page stalker) The lead is definitely too short, I'm not sure about the article overall. There isn't an exact length require for a GA, to my knowledge. As long as it covers everything about the person, I guess. I'd try to expand upon it a bit more.  — Statυs (talk, contribs) 03:25, 17 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. It's a somewhat minor BLP; not sure it can be expanded much, but I do feel it covers all the important aspects. I'll give it a whirl. CorporateM (Talk) 14:04, 17 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

An idea

edit

Ever since I did the first GA Sweeps, I've been wondering when there would be another one. And after reading up on this, I think that its a good time for a new sweep. I need a second opinion on proposing this idea. What do you think? GamerPro64 01:12, 26 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

I was just thinking about that. I will wholeheartedly support the revision of all good articles promoted before 31 December 2009 and after 26 August 2007. Then, we can make a part two and check all articles promoted between 1 January 2010 and 31 December 2011. We'd have to work on the worklist first, which would need the help of a bot. I got a friend to write a bot to make a list, so I'd only have to ask him if he could do some tweaks to make the bot search for the articles we'd need to review. I think that after that news, and after the Bicholim conflict and Legolas2186 hoax bombs, we seriously need to make another GA Sweeps. — ΛΧΣ21 01:19, 26 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
Good to know I'm not the only one. I just need to figure out how to set the proposal up first. GamerPro64 01:28, 26 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
Yeah. I can help you setting up the proposal, as well as all the pages for the Sweeps program and stuff. Regards. — ΛΧΣ21 01:37, 26 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
That would be great to have some help with this. By the way, where would I post this proposal at? Would it be at WP:GAN? GamerPro64 01:46, 26 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
Yes. A new thread at WT:GAN is the correct course of action, I guess. And I'd be glad to help as much as possible with this; I love collaborative efforts and working to make them go fine and steady is something I'm always willing to do :) Regards. — ΛΧΣ21 01:50, 26 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

WikiCup 2013 January newsletter

edit

Signups are now closed; we have our final 127 contestants for this year's competition. 64 contestants will make it to the next round at the end of February, but we're already seeing strong scoring compared to previous years. Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) currently leads, with 358 points. At this stage in 2012, the leader (Irish Citizen Army Grapple X (submissions)) had 342 points, while in 2011, the leader had 228 points. We also have a large number of scorers when compared with this stage in previous years. Florida 12george1 (submissions) was the first competitor to score this year, as he was last year, with a detailed good article review. Some other firsts:

Featured articles, portals and topics, as well as good topics, are yet to feature in the competition.

This year, the bonus points system has been reworked, with bonus points on offer for old articles prepared for did you know, and "multiplier" points reworked to become more linear. For details, please see Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring. There have been some teething problems as the bot has worked its way around the new system, but issues should mostly be ironed out- please report any problems to the WikiCup talk page. Here are some participants worthy of note with regards to the bonus points:

  • United States Ed! (submissions) was the first to score bonus points, with Portland-class cruiser, a good article.
  • Australia Hawkeye7 (submissions) has the highest overall bonus points, as well as the highest scoring article, thanks to his work on Enrico Fermi, now a good article. The biography of such a significant figure to the history of science warrants nearly five times the normal score.
  • Chicago HueSatLum (submissions) claimed bonus points for René Vautier and Nicolas de Fer, articles that did not exist on the English Wikipedia at the start of the year; a first for the WikiCup. The articles were eligible for bonus points because of fact they were both covered on a number of other Wikipedias.

Also, a quick mention of British Empire The C of E (submissions), who may well have already written the oddest article of the WikiCup this year: did you know that the Fucking mayor objected to Fucking Hell on the grounds that there was no Fucking brewery? The gauntlet has been thrown down; can anyone beat it?

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Template:Did you know nominations/Vamos A Celebrar

edit

Hahc21, have you checked over this article yet? It's been almost two weeks since SandyGeorgia stopped by with some very concerning points about direct translation being close paraphrasing/copyvio on material from Spanish to English, and on this article in particular.

What concerns me is that there seems to be only a single fix: one phrase in the article now has quotes around it. It seems unlikely that this was all there was to it, even if she gave one example. You basically took responsibility here, and effectively stood surety that all potential problems, if others existed, would be addressed in the articles DivaKnockouts had created. That's especially true here.

Since SandyGeorgia pointed out the problem, I plan to ask her whether the close paraphrasing issue has been addressed on this nomination. I really don't want her to find that it hasn't. If you haven't yet done so, when do you think your checks will be completed and the issues (if any remain) addressed? Many thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 01:59, 28 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

I think I have addressed them all now. I almost rewrote the entire article. I think this may solve the copyvio issues, although I'd still have to check the references. Anyways, I think that, as I changed almost every sentence, it won't fall as a copyvio anymore. In adidition, I am sorry to not be able to deal with this faster; RL issues are keeping the time I'd like to dedicate to the project. Regards. — ΛΧΣ21 02:18, 28 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
You did make a lot of changes: if you think it will indeed pass muster, I'll ping SandyGeorgia sometime Tuesday. (I gotta confess, though: I tend to think of Murphy's law when I read "changed almost every sentence" and "still have to check the references". If it were me, I'd want to be as sure as possible, given that a CCI was a real possibility for a while there. It's your call, though.) Thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 07:01, 29 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
There is a CCI, and there are multiple issues turning up (the CCI is being kept informal, in MoonRiddenGirl's userspace, since it requires Spanish-speaking editors, but it will be moved to CCI space if progress isn't made). User:Moonriddengirl/DivaKnockouts. It's unfortunate that these issues weren't called to Diva's attention sooner, as there are not only copyvio issues, but sourcing issues as well. Recusal?

edit

Hi ΛΧΣ, you recused yourself on the Sexology arbitration request and yet you seem to be doing clerking re statement lengths? I cannot see how anything you have done could be biased or controversial, nor do you have any need to recuse with respect to me, but I'm confused about whether you are recused or not? Thryduulf (talk) 00:20, 1 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

I recused myself to be a clerk on the case if the case is eventually opened. Until it is not opened, I can still perform the common uncontroversial clerk tasks that are needed. I may un-recuse myself if I end up considering that I can clerk the case, but I will give it a little more thought before. Thanks for the question Thryduulf. Chopra FLC

edit

Hi, I have nominated Chopra's awards and nominations list for FLC. Please, feel free to represent your though on it. The list was successfully reviewed for one month and have improved a lot. I'll be grateful if you can represent your suggestions here...Wikipedia:Featured list candidates/List of awards and nominations received by Priyanka Chopra/archive2 as fast as you can. Thank You.Prashant    10:42, 3 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

I have read the first paragraph and I still don't like how it is written. It should focus on her awards and career. Mentioning that she is a former Miss World should be brief. Also, I see that it needs a better flow (It reads as fact X. fact Y, which is not up to standard). The other two paragraphs seem to be better. I'd take a deeper look later. I have to finish a newsletter :) — ΛΧΣ21 16:27, 3 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

My application for file mover

edit

Hello, You stated "requester's rationale to obtain the rights is not under what the file mover right is for" on my application. Can you explain to me how my statement of "So I that I could help insure files conform to wikipedia's standards by being appropriate by making sure they are not,Offensive/Crude, non missleading, and accurate ones" is not a good one for requesting this flag? Filemover is ment so that people are not Confussed, and that files are appropriate, example File:uglestgirlintheworld.jpg to File:Jane_Doe.jpgTucsonDavidU.S.A. 22:50, 3 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

File mover is a very delicate permission. Only users with long experience working with files can obtain it. A file should be moved only when necessary, and not precisely to avoid confusion but to avoid a series of things listed in the file renaming criteria. In your request, you have to showcase that you have experience with files, requesting renames, uploading files and knowing a bit of policy before you can apply for the file mover right. Regards. — ΛΧΣ21 23:19, 3 February 2013 (UTC)Reply
I may not have phrased it perfectly but I did not want to name every reason in the book why they should grant it to me. I have almost three years on wikipedia just because I have never requested a file move doesn't mean I'm inexperienced. So may I ask that you consider changing your objection from oppose to support or atleast neutral. Thanks TucsonDavidU.S.A. 23:43, 3 February 2013 (UTC)Reply
Remember that you have to convince the administrator that you are ready to handle the rights. It doesn't matter if I object or not, the administrator won't take into consideration what we say (well, yes, they might) but what your contributions say. If you have not worked with files in your three-year career, you won't be granted the right. Actually, I am seeing that you only have three contributions to the File namespace, which means that there is a big possibility that you won't be granted the right. My recommendation is to work more on that namespace, and then, request the right again. Regards. — ΛΧΣ21 23:54, 3 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

Billboard fiasco

edit

I'm sure you've noticed that none of our templates work well anymore. Three things have happened:

  1. Billboard reassigned every artistid
  2. Billboard changed the URL format
  3. Billboard now verifies the artist name in the normal URL and requires us to format it in a way that Wikimedia software cannot automatically do.

I've got a script running that will build us a list of Billboard IDs for every artist that is listed on Billboard and has a Wikipedia article. We'll be able to make {{BillboardID}} work from that. I've found a hidden series of shadow URLs that don't include the artist name, so I should be able to work past that part. I'll let you know when singlechart is working again, and then you should be able to make similar changes to albumchart.—Kww(talk) 22:18, 28 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

Yes. I was aware and I was pretty upset about it. I will try to do a workaround on {{Albumchart}} to get the readers at least to the Billboard site when they check the reference, although I hope we can fix this as soon as possible. Regards. — ΛΧΣ21 22:30, 28 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi Hahc21! I did not know you also contributed to the English Wikipedia (my home Wiki). As you can see I've gotten into an argument again; perhaps I should stop editing controversial articles. Thanks for your offer to help out at the dispute resolution noticeboard. Ajaxfiore (talk) 16:33, 6 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hey! This is my main wiki too, as you can see. Well, not editing controversial articles can be a way to solve the issue, but discussing things on the talkpage may always solve issues too. I am glad I can help you again :) — ΛΧΣ21 16:44, 6 February 2013 (UTC)Reply
Actually, there has been lots of discussion, at least on the article in question. I did not open the case at the Dispute Resolution Board, and was actually thinking of taking RidjalA to AN/I.[1] Seeing my comment on the DRN, do you suggest I take this matter to AN/I or wait for the dispute resolution to close, since the noticeboard is not for discussing the behavior of editors? Ajaxfiore (talk) 17:33, 6 February 2013 (UTC)Reply
Content must be discussed at DRN, and behaviour at ANI. You can have two separate discussions at DRN and ANI at the same time of both comply with this (content at DRN and behaviour at ANI). — ΛΧΣ21 17:45, 6 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

Userbox

edit

I have no issue with your userbox, and do not consider it to be comparable with the RfA candidate's. I see no problem with someone taking pride in what he or she is, or what he or she believes (unless it is clearly malicious, e.g. "I'm proud to rape underage girls".) I *do* take issue with someone putting down other people and/or their beliefs. If you're gay, be gay, be proud to be gay, it doesn't negatively affect me one bit. If you start talking about how the world would be better off without straight people, then I've lost respect for you. Keepscases (talk) 02:39, 7 February 2013‎ (UTC)Reply

I understand the respect thing. Although, I did not find that userbox insulting. I respect your right to oppose her and I am in no way challenging your oppose :) I just wanted to express what I thought about it. Thanks for the response. Regards. — ΛΧΣ21 02:46, 7 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

First, I want to say sorry that I couldn't work on the newsletter. The weather was nice here so I just had to go skiing during the weekend and as you know, I had exams. Second, this is only if you want to, but I just want to ask if you would like to review SheiKra for GA status for me (or else it will take months for the article to get reviewed :P ) as I would like to nominate it for FA status after that. Again, that's only if you want to.--Dom497 (talk) 00:07, 5 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

BillboardURL

edit

{{BillboardURL}} is working. Call it with the artist name and the chart number, and it will come back with the correct URL on Billboard's site for the chart. It uses {{BillboardID}}.

My crawler for updating Billboard IDs is still running. It's built a list of 14,000 artistids that have both a Wikipedia article and a Billboard chart. My toolchain for building a new version of BillboardID that uses it is working. I've got a problem with Unicode characters in artist names, and we'll have to work around that manually for now. Should be up and running with the new BillboardID tomorrow, as soon as the crawler completes.—Kww(talk) 18:50, 5 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

I'm not sure it's worth the effort. When a chart number changes, we only have to update singlechart or albumchart anyway. It's not a change that has to go into hundreds of places.—Kww(talk) 18:58, 5 February 2013 (UTC)Reply
User:Kww/singlechart has been converted. I'm going to put it up at the same time as I put up the new BillboardID.—Kww(talk) 19:21, 5 February 2013 (UTC)Reply
Incorrect data in BillboardID: it's got 364593 and it should be 364953. 5 and 9 are reversed.—Kww(talk) 19:33, 5 February 2013 (UTC)Reply
That's strange. I'll keep looking at it, but I have to get started on my other stuff.—Kww(talk) 19:58, 5 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

It's my side, not yours. I've got a workaround that works, but I want BillboardURL to work. I've got the simplest testcase at User talk:Kww/BillboardURL and I've asked at the Village Pump. Hopefully someone is smarter than me.—Kww(talk) 06:15, 6 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

BillboardID live

edit

Over 30,000 artists are now supported. It's split up into over forty templates to deal with the size: {{BillboardID/A}}, {{BillboardID/B}}, etc. All {{BillboardID}} does anymore is select the right one to call.

Entries in the sublists have to be made in lower case. The files currently use the exact Billboard name, but you can add aliases if you want.—Kww(talk) 21:53, 6 February 2013 (UTC)Reply
I thought our last discussion over, and decided that discographies could use better templates. So, {{BillboardChartNum|chart name}} will return the integer number associated with that BillboardChart, and {{BillboardURLbyName}} will return a URL for that chart for that artist, i.e. {{BillboardURLbyName|artist=Shakira|chart=Hot 100}} will generate https://www.billboard.com/artist/shakira/chart-history/hot-100. The chart name mapping is documented at {{BillboardChartNum}}.—Kww(talk) 02:18, 7 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

AN closed

edit

Based on overwhelming I've closed the AN thread regarding your editing restriction as "lifted". As a piece of personal advice, tread slowly as you proceed with NACs and, most important, respond with due consideration and grace if/when an editor challenges one of your closes. To be clear, if you make a "bad" close and someone reverts it, no ones going to care all that much, but if you make a fuss about the reversion that will get on folks' nerves. No idea. But if it fails (which is what would likely happen), I have no problem with it. I am not dying to become an administrator. If the community believes that I can help as such, good. Otherwise, is good too. I think I have matured enough to stay calmed and understand that I cannot let my emotions drive my actions when it comes to this kind of things. As I stated elsewhere, when I joined Wikipedia, my main goal was to improve content, and I feel very happy that I have achieved this goal. I accepted the nomination because some users trusted in me, and I wanted to see if community did. I am more than happy now that my restriction is lifted, regardless of the resultt of my current RfA :) — Hahc21talk 15:34, 11 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

Albumchart

edit

Glad to hear it's working. The lowercase restriction only applies to additions to the template: anything inside one of the BillboardID templates has to be lowercase, but the template ignores the case of whatever is passed.—Kww(talk) 15:47, 11 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

No. Go open an edit window for {{BillboardID/F}} and take a look at the source. If you had to add an artist named "Fuzzy Fandango", the line would have to read "|fuzzy fandango = 99999999999". If you added "|Fuzzy Fandango = 99999999999", then BillboardID wouldn't be able to find "Fuzzy Fandango".—Kww(talk) 15:56, 11 February 2013 (UTC)Reply
