Hi there. In case you didn't know, when you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion, you should sign your posts by typing four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment. Fair use rationale for Image:Lusitania at New York, 1907.jpg

edit

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Lusitania at New York, 1907.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. SchuminWeb (Talk) 00:43, 29 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Orphaned non-free image (Image:Lusitania at New York, 1907.jpg)

edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Lusitania at New York, 1907.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:Lusitania at New York, 1907.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

 1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add , without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
 2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Do you want to opt out of receiving this notice? SchuminWeb (Talk) 00:44, 29 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Please don't upload video stills from YouTube in the method you've been doing. All the images are replaceable with free images in the way they're being used, and are able to be speedy-deleted as blatant copyright infringements. SchuminWeb (Talk) 05:25, 1 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Speedy deletion of List of fictional aviation accidents and incidents

edit

A tag has been placed on List of fictional aviation accidents and incidents requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a very short article providing little or no context to the reader. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding hangon to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the article does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that a copy be emailed to you. - Realkyhick (Talk to me) 03:00, 18 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

In the case of HMHS Britannic, there is already a free image of the Britannic's sinking in the article that conveys the same information as the non-free image you are continuing to add. Image:Michelangelo 1962.jpg - wrong year

edit

First off, good work with looking up free images of various ocean liners. However, the year in this image has got to be wrong - here is image of what she looked like in late 1962 when she was launched from drydock. The image has to date from when the ship was in active service, between 1965-1975. — Kjet (talk · contribs) 16:58, 6 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

You also state the image is more than 50 years old, or was made prior to 1957. As the vessel did not then exist there is no basis for your claim of public domain status. Kablammo (talk) 19:45, 12 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Edit summaries...

edit

I have noticed that you often edit without an edit summary. Please do your best to always fill in the summary field. This is considered an important guideline in Wikipedia. Even a short summary is better than no summary. An edit summary is even more important if you delete any text; otherwise, people may think you're being sneaky. Also, mentioning one change but not another one can be misleading to someone who finds the other one more important; add "and misc." to cover the other change(s). Image permission problem with Image:MS Kungsholm 4.jpg

edit

Image Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading Image:MS Kungsholm 4.jpg. I noticed that that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the image (or other media file) agreed to license it under the given license.

If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

 • make a note permitting reuse under the GFDL or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
 • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the image to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the image has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as article name or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the image's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Images lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. — Kjet (talk · contribs) 07:38, 5 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for uploading Image:CP Air.jpg. You've indicated that the image meets Wikipedia's criteria for non-free content, but there is no explanation of why it meets those criteria. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. If you have any questions, please post them at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions.

Thank you for your cooperation. NOTE: once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page. STBotI (talk) 23:02, 9 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hello Aquitania. I have nominated an article you worked on for deletion, Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Princess Kaguya (cruise ship). It was deleted before, which you likely were unaware of, as I see you came "on board" Wikipedia relatively recently. You can express your opinion at the link above. Ship infoboxes

edit

I noticed your work on RMS Alaunia and it is generally good, but you are using a deprecated infobox that is only adding additional work to editors who are converting the old ones to the new one: Infobox Ship Begin. I'd appreciate it if you would use this one instead and stop adding additional work to those who are working to convert all the old ones. Thanks, -MBK004 04:15, 10 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Speedy deletion of Princess Kaguya (cruise ship)

edit

A tag has been placed on Princess Kaguya (cruise ship), requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G4 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be a repost of material that was previously deleted following a deletion debate, such as at articles for deletion. Under the specified criteria, where an article has substantially identical content to that of an article deleted after debate, and any changes in the content do not address the reasons for which the material was previously deleted, it may be deleted at any time.

Lastly, please note that if the article does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that a copy be emailed to you. ukexpat (talk) 22:39, 10 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Princess Kaguya.jpg)

edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Princess Kaguya.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 05:22, 11 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

More image questions

edit

Hello again. I have some questions about some of your image uploads.

You have today uploaded two images of Cap Arcona, a ship in existence from 1927-45. You have stated that more than 70 years has passed since the death of the photographer. It is possible that one or both of these images was taken in the last 70 years; it is likely that the photographer died within the past 70 years. You have stated that the dates and authors are unknown. Given that, where is the basis for the claim that the photographers have been dead 70 or more years?

Yesterday you added an image of the SS Barbarossa under the claim that it is in the public domain as the work of the US Navy. The image is a color painting, perhaps a cigarette card or advertisement, with a foreign language legend. It is unlikely it is a work of the US Navy. What is the source of your assertion that it is in the public domain?

On 5 November you uploaded an image of the MS Kungsholm with the assertion that the copyright holder had released it into the public domain. Proof of that is lacking. Do you claim you are the copyright holder, or do you have proof that the copyright holder released it?

On 30 October you uploaded an image of a postcard of RMS Llandovery Castle with the assertion it is a work of the British government. Is there any proof that the UK government created this postcard?

This talk page indicates a number of other problems with images. While your contributions to ship articles are welcome, images cannot be added unless their copyright status is clear, and use is allowed by law or permission of the copyright holder. Kablammo (talk) 15:45, 11 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Agreed. You need to be far more careful about the images you upload. Just because an image is on the Internet does NOT mean that you are allowed to use it wherever you want. Continued future image problems may result in your being blocked from editing Wikipedia. SchuminWeb (Talk) 16:07, 11 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:Kronprinzessin Cecilie and Kaiser Wilhelm II.jpg.

Image permission problem with Image:Windsor Castle III.jpg

edit

Image Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading Image:Windsor Castle III.jpg, which you've sourced to http://www.ibiblio.org/maritime/media/displayimage.php?album=3569&pos=1.

Thank you. — Kjet (talk · contribs) 22:27, 16 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hello. Concerning your contribution, Image:SS Barbarossa.jpg, please note that Wikipedia cannot accept copyrighted text or images obtained from other web sites or printed material, without the permission of the author(s). This article or image appears to be a direct copy from http://stephendanko.com/blog/category/immigration/immigrant-ships/. As a copyright violation, Image:SS Barbarossa.jpg appears to qualify for deletion under the speedy deletion criteria. Image:SS Barbarossa.jpg has been tagged for deletion, and may have been deleted by the time you see this message.

If you believe that the article or image is not a copyright violation, or if you have permission from the copyright holder to release the content freely under the GNU Free Documentation License (GFDL) then you should do one of the following:

 • If you have permission from the author, leave a message explaining the details at Talk:Image:SS Barbarossa.jpg and send an email with the message to "permissions-en (at) wikimedia (dot) org". See Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission for instructions.
 • If a note on the original website states that re-use is permitted under the GFDL or released into the public domain leave a note at Talk:Image:SS Barbarossa.jpg with a link to where we can find that note.
 • If you own the copyright to the material: send an e-mail from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en(at)wikimedia(dot)org or a postal message to the Wikimedia Foundation permitting re-use under the GFDL, and note that you have done so on Talk:Image:SS Barbarossa.jpg.

However, for textual content, you may simply consider rewriting the content in your own words. Thank you. Benea (talk) 23:34, 16 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Suggestions

edit

Aquitania, you are helping Wikipedia by adding content to relatively sparse articles on historic vessels. But as shown above, your image uploads are causing a lot of concern as well. You are now starting to ask questions, which is good. But to prevent problems in the future, here are a few comments and suggestions.

 • Images and other content, found off-site, are subject to copyright even if they do not contain a claim of copyright. Copyright exists from the moment of creation; it is only extinguished by the voluntary relinquishment of those rights, or by law.
 • It is the uploader's responsibility to make sure that images are free of copyright, before uploading them.
 • Someone who wrongfully uploads copyrighted material can be liable for copyright infringment. If someone uploads material here and incorrectly claims that it is not subject to copyright, the uploader can be held responsible. That responsibility can extend even to harm caused by later users of those images, who copied them from Wikipedia in reliance on the Wikipedia uploader's claim that those images are free, and then uses them for advertising or other commercial or non-commercial purposes, which deprives the copyright owner of royalties or otherwise causes harm. Remember, Wikipedia is one of the most visited websites in the world, and incorrect infomation here can spread far and wide.
 • Under no circumstances should an uploader claim an image is in the public domain without taking reasonable steps to verify that. Do not make claims that images are the product of a government employee, unless you know that. Do not make claims based on the passage of time since the death of an image maker, without verifying the date of death. I have found one image where the artist did die more than 70 years ago (therefore making it free); I have found others where the image itself likely was created within the last 70 years, yet public domain status was claimed. If you claim public domain status based on the passage of time from death of the creator, it is advisable to state the basis of that claim, such as how you determined the date of death.
 • Please appreciate that even anonymous editors can have their identities revealed through their IP addresses, which can be obtained by subpoena. That could reveal the name of someone who improperly uploaded material without a valid right to do so.
 • When in doubt, do not upload. The "default" position here is do not upload; upload only if you are sure that it is permissible. There are a lot of copyright violations on the Internet, but Wikipedia cannot be part of that.
 • Finally, where questions are posed here, please answer them. You will find many editors may be willing to assist you if you engage with them.

Now I do not claim to be an expert on copyright, and you should direct your questions to the appropriate resources on Wikipedia, as you have started to do.

Thanks, and good luck with your continued improvements of your articles. Regards, Kablammo (talk) 23:08, 19 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Please upload public domain images to the commons

edit

Please upload public domain images - mostly images published in the United States before 1923 or whose photographers died more than 70 years ago - to the Wikimedia Commons so they can be shared by Wikipedias in other languages as well as other Wikipedia projects. Note that most photographs taken by employees of the United States Government while on the job, including most military photographs, are in the public domain. Most photographs taken by British government employees enter the public domain 50 years after publication. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs)/(e-mail) 03:56, 10 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

File source problem with File:Michelangelo 1962.jpg

Thanks for uploading File:Michelangelo 1962.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of that website's terms of use of its content. However, if the copyright holder is a party unaffiliated from the website's publisher, that copyright should also be acknowledged.

Help you with posting pictures

edit

Hey! I've noticed that quite a few pictures you have posted over the years have been removed. Here is a good way to get around this if the pictures are of ships: Try to find a postcard of the ship in question (Like for example, the SS France (1961) as the Norway.) Make sure that the company who issued the card is/has: 1. Defunct (Italian Line, Home Lines) 2. Sold the ship for other service or scrap (NCL, Louis Cruise Lines) Upload the photo. Add a fair use rationale. In the description for no.1 put: (Company) that issued this postcard no longer exists, therefore has no interest in its reproduction. (website) does not own the image, just a copy of it.

In the description for no.2 put: (Website) is a reproducer of this image, but does not own it. The author just owns a copy of the image. The issuer, (Company), now longer owns or has any interest in this image, and none of its kind have been issued since (year ship was sold/scrapped)

Just a little tip. This has worked for me 6 times. I am planning on using this formula to add a picture to the Raffaello and Michelangelo articles. By the way, its nice to known that another liner buff lives in San Diego :) 1Matt20 (talk) 23:07, 11 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Orphaned non-free image File:Gustloffsinking.jpg

edit

Thanks for uploading File:Gustloffsinking.jpg.

You can find a list of "file" pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. File permission problem with File:RMS EmpressOfCanada1929.jpg

edit

Thanks for uploading File:RMS EmpressOfCanada1929.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file agreed to license it under the given license.

If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

 • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
 • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add OTRS pending to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as article name or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. SchuminWeb (Talk) 20:30, 11 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Proposed for deletion: St. Aphrodite (ship)

edit

Proposed deletion of St. Aphrodite (ship)

edit

The article St. Aphrodite (ship) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Orphan article about fictional ship from an anime movie, no notability established, no references, not encyclopedic. Should be deleted per Wikipedia:Notability_(fiction).

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the dated prod notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing dated prod will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. ⌘macwhiz (talk) 19:12, 27 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

List of Presidents of the United States

edit

Many thanks for your comments on my proposal for a new format for the list. I have explained why I have used photographs instead of the presidential portraits (basically, I think they are clearer), but if consensus develops behind the portraits, I am happy to change this. I am now looking for consensus to replace the list, at the conversation here. Many thanks. BartBassist (talk) 13:41, 31 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Proposed deletion of Olympic (unfinished ship)

edit

The article Olympic (unfinished ship) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Not notable. Subject fails GNG. The ship was never built and is at most a footnote in maritime history. I was unable to find any sources that ring the notability bell.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. File source problem with File:Lusitania Mauretania 2.JPG

edit

Thank you for uploading File:Lusitania Mauretania 2.JPG. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the page from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of the website's terms of use of its content. If the original copyright holder is a party unaffiliated with the website, that author should also be credited. Please add this information by editing the image description page.

If the necessary information is not added within the next days, the image will be deleted. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem.

Please refer to the image use policy to learn what images you can or cannot upload on Wikipedia. Please also check any other files you have uploaded to make sure they are correctly tagged. Here is a list of your uploads. If you have any questions or are in need of assistance please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Thank you for uploading File:Four ex-German liners.jpg. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright and licensing status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can verify that it has an acceptable license status and a verifiable source. Please add this information by editing the image description page. You may refer to the image use policy to learn what files you can or cannot upload on Wikipedia. The page on copyright tags may help you to find the correct tag to use for your file. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem.

Please also check any other files you may have uploaded to make sure they are correctly tagged. Here is a list of your uploads.

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited SS Traffic (1911), you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Brest. Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

It's OK to remove this message. Also, to stop receiving these messages, follow these opt-out instructions. Thanks, DPL bot (talk) 05:59, 8 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

Replaceable fair use File:Cunard Ambassador.jpg

edit

Thanks for uploading File:Cunard Ambassador.jpg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of fair use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:

 1. Go to the file description page and add the text below the original replaceable fair use template, replacing <your reason> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
 2. On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification, per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Whpq (talk) 00:48, 20 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
