Template:CanParlbio

edit

I have added the template:Infobox MP to numerous MPs pages. I used the phrase 'Parliament of Canada biography' over the link to the MPs official biography. Does anyone object to me changing the template message currently used here to the one that I use? NorthernThunder (talk) 03:00, 18 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Would it be more useful to have this template generate the URL as [http://www2.parl.gc.ca/parlinfo/Files/Parliamentarian.aspx?Item={{{1|{{{ID}}}}}}&Language=E&Section=ALL ... so that it includes all elements of the person's biography instead of only including the federal experience section? -- Big Iron (talk) 11:22, 25 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

100% agree that Section=ALL is a lot more useful that just Federal Experience  Leef5  TALK | CONTRIBS 14:19, 16 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

edit

On the first line, please change Section=FederalExperience to Section=ALL

Then when this External link is clicked, it will show the entire parlimentary profile, instead of only the 1st section "Federal Experience" This was suggested in Category talk and I concur with the request. This will not break any articles that currently use this template.

Merge Template:MPLinksCA

edit

Code is in the sandbox for the merge, example output is on the testcases page. I'll open an edit request in a few days if no objections are raised. — Bility (talk) 20:54, 1 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Opening edit request. Template can be synced with sandbox code. Change requested to merge another template per TfD. — Bility (talk) 18:14, 7 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Haven,t found any flaws so far. I've just translated the model in french. Guess, I'll have to correct a few points too if I want to keep up  . Only thing, Parlinfo seems to have moved all the pages. Not sure if it's just a bug for the evening or a permanent situation, but we'll have to keep an eye on that. --SamuelFreli (talk) 02:18, 9 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
The links in the testcases seem to go where intended today, can you confirm the links are good? — Bility (talk) 16:05, 9 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi - a change in behaviour for the CanParlbio template was introduced by the merge of MPLinksCA. The CanParlbio template now generates a list entry: before that change, it didn't. That causes bad formatting when the current template is used in a reference. Could someone look into correcting or reversing that change please? --Big_iron (talk) 11:45, 12 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Reverted. Bility, can you respond? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 18:50, 12 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
I don't know how many uses of this template in references there are, but the hundreds of conversions from MPLinksCA that are in external links sections are now broken. I've added a |nolist=yes parameter in the sandbox and tested it in the testcases and it seems to work. It would require that current uses of this template in references add this parameter. — Bility (talk) 16:07, 13 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
Is there any way of generating a list of instances which occur in references, so that these may be fixed? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 17:14, 13 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
Here's a list: User:Bility/cleanup. It's a lot of instances. Too bad no one in the TfD mentioned that these two templates were used in wildly different ways when they decided to merge them. I'll submit an AWB task request and see if we can get the |nolist= parameter added. — Bility (talk) 19:57, 13 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
Perhaps it would be more appropriate to send it back to TfD and explain why merging is less desired due to the wildly different uses? If the answer still comes back as merge, I would be happy to batch that fix in. Technical 13 (talk) 21:31, 13 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

I have deactivated the request. Please renable when needed. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 10:19, 15 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Reactivating request: please sync to sandbox. Instances of this template used within references have had |nolist=yes added and documentation has been updated. Thanks, — Bility (talk) 17:30, 24 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
Done, although a less complicated solution may have been to just check to see if there is only one link being generated, and omit the bullet in that case? Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 23:12, 27 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Template name

edit

I'd like to rename this template to something clearer like Template:Canadian Parliament biography. Of course the existing title will still work as a redirect. What do people think? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 12:02, 14 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Well it produces external links and not all of them are to a biography, although they're all biographical in nature. "Canadian Parliament external links" is pretty accurate, if quite wordy. Anyway, I support a change to a clearer title and your suggestion works for me. — Bility (talk) 15:10, 14 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
I've taken your suggestion but shortened it slightly. Though perhaps the best title was an existing redirect Template:Parliament of Canada biography. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 08:14, 16 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Support needed for linking to Archived pages

edit

This (and similar) template(s) need support for archiving (such as via Internet Archive (web.archive.org)) (preferably utilizing the standard |archiveurl=, |archivedate=, & |deadurl=yes/no parameters). It's common practice for minister's bios to be deleted once they leave office and the link to the cited information is rendered useless, even if a web page's content was previously archived. Thanks to anyone that can make it happen! Cheers — Who R you? Talk 22:44, 2 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

edit

openparliament.ca supports HTTPS, and using HTTPS for the openparliament link would provide increased privacy and security for users, particularly given Wikimedia's move to HTTPS by default. In the template, please change http://openparliament.ca/ to https://openparliament.ca/ instead. Thanks. --Elegie (talk) 09:36, 8 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

edit

The purpose of this edit is to provide increased privacy and security for users by having the template use HTTPS URLs when generating links to a Canadian Parliament profile and/or biography. For profiles, the page at http://www.parl.gc.ca/MembersOfParliament/ProfileMP.aspx?Key=170352&Language=E (for example) generates a series of four 301 Moved Permanently redirects that lead to http://www.ourcommons.ca/Parliamentarians/en/members/profileredirect?affiliationId=170352. In addition, the profile page can be viewed via HTTPS by visiting https://www.ourcommons.ca/Parliamentarians/en/members/profileredirect?affiliationId=170352. In the case of biographies, the URL http://www.parl.gc.ca/parlinfo/Files/Parliamentarian.aspx?Item=a20523be-cae0-4d31-9595-e9303275e40d&Language=E&Section=ALL (for example) generates a series of three 301 Moved Permanently redirects that lead to https://lop.parl.ca/ParlInfo/Files/Parliamentarian.aspx?Item=a20523be-cae0-4d31-9595-e9303275e40d&Language=E&Section=ALL.

In the template, please change http://www.parl.gc.ca/MembersOfParliament/ProfileMP.aspx?Key={{{parliament}}}&Language=E to https://www.ourcommons.ca/Parliamentarians/en/members/profileredirect?affiliationId={{{parliament}}} instead and please change http://www.parl.gc.ca/parlinfo/ to https://lop.parl.ca/ParlInfo/ instead. Thanks. --Elegie (talk) 17:08, 27 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

The link generated by this template is broken and I can't find where the information for past M.P.'s is stored. Anyone have any information on this? EncyclopediaUpdaticus (talk) 17:57, 21 November 2017 (UTC)Reply

The website has been completely reformatted, and there is a new syntax for generating links. For example, the biography for Sydney Chilton Mewburn, which I was just looking at, is now found at https://lop.parl.ca/sites/ParlInfo/default/en_CA/People/Profile?personId=5522.
