Clarifying technicalities in USS Hue City CG-66 naming

edit

The naming of this Aegis-configured cruiser was for the 1st Marines operationally directed battle that opened within the city of Hué, Thua Thien Province, at the onset of the 1968 Tet Offensive in the Republic of Vietnam (RVN). The official 1st Marines After Action Report delineates all the fighting units involved in the Battle of Hué for which the 1st Marines (infantry regiment, along with attached units) received the Presidential Unit Citation (Navy version) and indicates that the Battle of Hué ended circa 23 February 1968. Although certain Army and Air Force individuals, many Army of RVN indviduals and certain ARVN units, as well as a few Army 'Dusters' (attached to 1st Marines), fought within the city, the Battle of Hué (for which the ship has been named) technically was the Marine battle fought from within outward. The U.S. Army fought major battles outside and around the city from the south (101st Airborne - including Operation Mingo follwing official 'Battle of Hué) to the west & north (1st Cavalry [Airmobile], better known as 1st AirCav). The ship is not named for these battles fought at the same time during the Tet Offensive. Thus saying 'named for U.S. Marine and U.S. Army battle' is technically incorrect as applied to the naming of USS HUE CITY. As 1st Battalion/1st Marines S-2 at onset of Battle of Hue, then Bravo 1/1 rifle company commander for most of the battle, the details of all this, as well as reviewing of and assisting in corrections to official 1st Marines After Action Report, are known to me in great depth and considerable scope. Also please note that the caption under the Official Seal of the ship is incorrect: it should read 'Official Seal'. The 'Crest' is only that part above the Shield of the Coat of Arms within the anchor-chain and belt around the Coat of Arms. One can understand this better by going to the 'navysite.de' reference cited on the article page. RbtBlack (talk) 14:41, 17 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Fire investigation completed

edit

This article at the Navy Times, http://www.navytimes.com/story/military/2015/02/24/hue-city-fire-at-sea/23747141/ notes the results of the investigation of the fire. I may update this article myself a little later, but for now I will just add the update tag and this link. Safiel (talk) 20:43, 24 February 2015 (UTC)Reply
