Well, they live in Ireland, but they are Mexican, so sure they should be listed as an Irish band? Añoranza 12:03, 11 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

  • No, they shouldn't. Kanda Bongo Man is Congolese, living in Manchester, but is still hailed as the best Congolese musician ever. Place of residence doesn't matter. JimHxn 10:52, 8 July 2006 (UTC)Reply
  • Thats ridiculous, of course their not an irish band. Just because they live here doesn't make them irish. that would be like calling Roy Keane a great English footballer just because he played for Manchester United and also lived there.

In an interview with Avenue11.com, Rodrigo states that they no longer live in Ireland. They have moved back to Mexico. The beginning article should be changed to reflect that. Casey J. Amdahl —Preceding unsigned comment added by 124.40.59.119 (talk) 16:08, 10 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Change of Origin

edit

I believe that their place of birth is not Ireland. If you look at their website, it states that they are from Mexico City, Mexico. The location still remains Ireland, though that is where they reside. Chriscarlos 04:05, 29 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

I have just changed the origin field to Dublin. But, this is not on the basis that they are Irish, but because there is no indication of any proper activity as a group, preceeding Ireland. If someone can show me a proper release of a CD before they came to Ireland, I will gladly revert, or allow a revert. If not, this makes the origin of the GROUP (not its members) Ireland as per policies listed at Template:Infobox musical artist (where, if a band's origin, and its members' are not the same, to use the band's). The site also seems to confirm what I just said (about no proper activity as Rodrigo y Gabriela until Ireland) but it's worded ambiguously so it's not much of a help. - Рэдхот(tce) 21:06, 10 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

QFT - "The city from which the singer or group originated (that is, the city where the group was founded; or the city where individual performers started their career, should it not match the location of their birth)." -- It's quite clear that Rodrigo and Gabriela both started their careers in Mexico, as is attested in this very article. Since both performers are from Mexico and met in Mexico, listing the band's origin as Dublin is sophistry.
But that refers to the group in question AFAIK. Did they have any activity in Mexico as Rodrigo y Gabriela before coming to Ireland? The article and their site don't seem particularly clear either way, but seem to lean towards the answer being no. If you can site a more clear source, please do so. And I really don't know who you think you are to assert my argument as sophistry, I was basing it entirely on my honest interpretations of the info on their site and WP policies - most of their site stuff, is hard to follow at best. - Рэдхот(tce) 14:20, 16 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Opening sentence

edit

The opening sentence doesn't make sense:

The duo met in Mexico City while playing in a thrash metal band called "Tierra Acida".

How can you meet while playing in a band? The story that Gabriela tells is that Rodrigo was in the band and she was a fan, and learned all of their songs, and that's how they met. She wasn't in the band, at least not when they met.— Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.107.79.110 (talk) 21:33, 21 April 2007

Ah interesting. If you can find a source for that, we can add it to the article. Cheers, -Panser Born- (talk) 21:50, 21 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

"We were friends... My band was practicing in her house." Rodrigo , 3:58 rodrigo y gabriela DVD, 2006

They were already friends when an opening came up in the band and then needed a guitar player. Gabriela who, being in the same house, already knew all the songs stepped in.Mikeburns 04:41, 25 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Genres:

Acoustic

Folk Rock

Metal?

JeffreyGomez 02:23, 24 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

from what i have heard, they are definitely NOT metal. they cover metal songs (orion, i believe) but that does not, in any way make them metal. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.192.20.87 (talk) 16:32, August 26, 2007 (UTC)

Can flamenco be added as one of the genres? I have their cd's and they truly sound with great spanish touch —Preceding unsigned comment added by 189.180.246.122 (talk) 00:32, 30 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

How can acoustic be considered metal? I don't care how fast you are playing, it's still acoustic. I want to see sources claiming that this is metal.
thick, massive sound - No
highly amplified distortion - No
overall loudness - No--猛禽22 07:14, 12 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

I would clasify them as flamenco with a rock influence. Roly (talk) 15:47, 31 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

Metal doesn't have a thing to do with what guitar is used; it has to do with chord changes and rhythms. They are definitely Metal-Influenced, and I sure wouldn't refer to them as flamenco. Flamenco is very demanding with respect to time signatures, golpe, and key signatures. Flamenco is largely within the realm of the Major-Phrygian mode, which they draw from very little. The reason it sounds 'flamenco' is because of the stroke styles and complex 'close-to-regueado' patterns Gab plays. However she uses a totally different triplet technique. The reason it sounds like flamenco, at least to untrained ears, is because they use nylon string flamenco guitars. I've been playing both styles for over half my life.73.170.190.251 (talk) 00:20, 9 March 2018 (UTC)Pi IvyReply

List of Tour Dates

edit

Is it really necessary to include a list of their live performances? Based on the list, these performances aren't really remarkable or unique. Tour schedules are generally published on the artist's site and it doesn't seem necessary here. Robbie Mac (talk) 05:50, 10 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Agreed. I'll delete the list. If anyone objects, feel free to defend this list's inclusion. Tdogg241 (talk) 21:29, 7 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Style?

edit

The style section appears to refer to their playing style. As such, the fact that they're vegans and animal rights supporters doesn't seem appropriate for that section.

Perhaps the relationship section could be renamed to (the more traditional) "personal lives" and those items could be moved to there.

The Dharmatist (talk) 20:46, 4 May 2015 (UTC)Reply

I liked that idea, so I was WP:BOLD and made the change. -- Irn (talk) 21:03, 4 May 2015 (UTC)Reply

Playing style

edit

It seems that the remark about playing only nylon guitars is outdated. In these pictures of a 2023 gig, Rodrigo is seen playing a Gibson Les Paul, a Fender Jaguar, a guitar I could not identify, and a lap steel. Would this count as original research? (Gabriela seems to still have a Yamaha nylon acoustic.) David.Monniaux (talk) 21:29, 13 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
