editJacob's middle name is, "Erwin", so I'm adding that in. Erwin is his grandfather's first name. Erwin died in 1997, without ever knowing what happened to his grandson. TripleH1976 05:06, 5 March 2006 (UTC)

Some points
edit- Heinrich was charged in federal court with 25 counts of child pornography. The federal penalty for that conduct is more severe than the state penalty, which is why the federal and not the state route was the one taken.
- He pled guilty to one of those counts; the remainder were dismissed under the plea agreement.
- As the kidnap and murder occurred entirely within the state, there was no basis for federal charges.
- Heinrich has not been charged by the state for the kidnap and murder of Jacob. He will not be charged for the murder and kidnap under the plea agreement.
- As part of the plea agreement, the state gave up the right to prosecute Heinrich for kidnapping and murder.
- The plea agreement was approved by the Wetterling family.
- When the sentence has been served, Heinrich may remain confined if Minnesota seeks and obtains civil commitment.
Most of these points were covered in the news conference which just concluded.

Why did the FBI not test the DNA back in 1989
edit- Danny James Heinrich, was publicly named in regard to Wetterling's disappearance. He had been questioned by the FBI on December 16, 1989 and a DNA sample was taken, but he was not charged with a crime and was let go.
- It says a DNA sample was taken. Was it not tested until decades later? It says it matches a different rape victim, but statue of limitations say they couldn't charge him by the time they got around to testing it. Article would benefit from specific information about this key aspect of the case. Anyone read anything that showed why? Dream Focus 23:06, 23 December 2016 (UTC)
- I don't know, and the question has been asked elsewhere. There appears to have been a lack of coordination and failure to share information between local authorities.
- As for the FBI, it may have been felt was no federal crime involved as the crime was a kidnapping within one state and there was no known basis of federal jurisdiction, such as transporting the victim across state lines. See 1034. Kidnapping—Federal Jurisdiction Federal jurisdiction over the more recent underage pornography charges stems from use of wire services that transmitted it.
- None of this is ripe for the article; while there has been speculation on these issues I haven't seen anything definitive. Kablammo (talk) 23:43, 23 December 2016 (UTC)
Dream Focus, I think you will find some answers here: In the Dark, from American Public Media.

Proposed merge of Patty Wetterling into Murder of Jacob Wetterling
editPatty Wetterling advocacy and campaign work is intricately tied with the disappearance and death of her son. She can be covered within Murder of Jacob Wetterling as there is already a lot of redundancy between the two, and her political work can be condensed Star Mississippi 18:29, 23 October 2024 (UTC)
- I disagree. Her notability is based on her own achievements, and goes far beyond dealing only with her son's disappearance. Bryan Krippner (talk) 19:43, 23 October 2024 (UTC)
- I disagree as well. Wetterling's achievements have surpassed justification for her to be tied solely to her son's murder. Cedar Tree 23:43, 26 October 2024 (UTC)
Me too. I disagree. A known murder of a person which has lots of information to become its own article shall NOT be connected to an article of a person who has enough notability to have an own article. What I'm trying to say is both articles are notable to exist, and there is no thing that makes the other article an duplicate of the other ones information, and none of the articles are stubs. Spongebob796 (talk) 12:30, 8 November 2024 (UTC)
I also disagree, for the reasons expressed above. Kablammo (talk) 21:44, 8 November 2024 (UTC)
