RfC on Moscow railway stations (completed)

Looking for thoughts on the names of the Moscow railway stations. A couple of years ago all of the stations were renamed with little apparent discussion. The name of the station in Russian is Paveletsky Vokzal (ru:Павелецкий вокзал. Although the word “station” in Russian is feminine and would take Paveletskaya skaya as a modifier, such as when you refer to a Metro station like Paveletskaya (Zamoskvoretskaya line) or ru:Павелецкая (станция метро, Замоскворецкая линия) , when you refer to a major railway terminal such as this, the modifier should refer to the masculine word “Vokzal” and would take Paveletsky. I’m not entirely sure what the logic behind the move to the feminine version was. But I propose to make these linguistically correct. The stations are:

• Moscow Kazansky railway station
• Moscow Kiyevsky railway station
• Moscow Kursky railway station
• Moscow Paveletsky railway station
• Moscow Rizhsky railway station
• Moscow Savyolovsky railway station
• Moscow Yaroslavsky railway station

Further, on two articles, Moscow Passazhirskaya railway station and Moscow Smolenskaya railway station the names don’t even comport to the name of the facility. As far as I can tell, the names used refer to the stop on the rail line. To me this would be like reading a timetable for a train that terminates at New York-Penn Station and naming the article that rather than Pennsylvania Station as the facility is officially called. I would propose to rename all of the articles after the proper names Belorussky railway station and Leningradsky railway station.

I think you should ping the person who did these moves for the full rationale. I believe (and I could be wrong) that they simply used the official station names (mostly transliterated, except for the "Moscow" part). The station where "Paveletsky vokzal" is located, for example, is formally designated as "Москва-Пассажирская-Павелецкая" (Moskva-Passazhirskaya-Paveletskaya), which corresponds more or less (in the mover's mind, at least) to "Moscow Paveletskaya railway station". "Paveletsky vokzal" itself is the name of the actual building of the station (where the waiting area, ticket booths, etc. are located). So, if the article is about the station, the current title more or less works. If it is about the building, then something like "Paveletsky train station" or "Paveletsky railway station building" would probably be a better choice (or even "Paveletsky vokzal", if one can demonstrate this is indeed a prevalent usage in English). If the intent is to cover both in the same article, then a decision needs to be made. Note that even in the Russian Wikipedia the actual "railway station" articles are sometimes separate from the "train station (building)" articles; see, for example, ru:Казанский вокзал vs. ru:Москва-Пассажирская-Казанская.—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); March 8, 2018; 14:50 (UTC)

I think the intent of the articles was to write about the railway terminals, not the stop on the rail line. Agree that Russian Wikipedia has separate articles and if someone wants to create those, they are welcome to do so. But the original intent of the articles was to write about the buildings as far as I can tell. It would also be consistent with the titles of other articles about major railroad terminals in Russia. If the intent is to make the Terminal articles about the stop on the rail line, then we might have to think about how we handle other articles in the FSU, if there is a discrepancy between the physical building and the stop on the real line. I’ll reach out to the mover User:SkyBon but having made 1 edit in the past 2.5 years and getting banned from Russian WP isn’t a good sign that we’ll hear from him.
