I don't know much about most of the post-retirement recordings, and I know at least some of them need moving to the "live" section. It might also be a good idea to add some annotation in some cases, if there is not a page for that particular album. I also think years given for live albums (and possibly all of them?) ought to be the year of recording not of release. --Andrew Norman 10:49, May 4, 2005 (UTC)

I've removed most of the links - it seems daft to have a huge list of links to non-existent articles (which in some cases may never exist). People can easily add links if they create articles for each of the albums. --Andrew Norman 14:35, May 4, 2005 (UTC)

Can the "after World War II" reference be changed to "until the 1990s" ? Miles was undoubtedly a very influential musician and spawned as well as headed many new trends. But he no longer does so, and a very great deal has happened in the 15 years since his last album.Arctic hobo 11:07, 10 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

He passed away in 1991. So, he did little in the 1990s to embellish jazz. Furthermore, his recordings of critical acclaim don't extend beyond the 1970s. Dogru144 21:27, 13 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Authorized records??

edit

Many of the live recordings from 1950s to 1960 on this list were not officially released. So, are we now departing from apparent wikipedia policy and now suddenly included unauthorized / bootleg recordings? Re the non-linkage with articles in wikipedia: well, look for the links and fix them. Dogru144 13 July 2006 (UTC)

The Subtitel is not right. With all the containd LP´s it must be "1945-1961 (Prestige / Debut)" or change the LP content. PS.: Great Article, hope i can see the discography growing...:-) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.146.241.162 (talk) 11:56, 9 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

I don't see the Columbia album, "Jazz Track", CL1268 (record). It is a combination of Elevator to the Scaffold (Side 1), and three tracks by the sextet with Adderley & Coltrane (Side 2). I assume if it's not in the listing (did I miss it?), it should be added.

Some Issues

edit

The nature of the jazz recording world makes it hard to have a standardized discography format for any artists in the genre, so I appreciate the efforts so far of those involved at making this article as good as it is. However, I have a few issues with the way some of the content in this discog has been ordered. First, I like how the albums are all sorted by release date, but I think that the recording year (sometimes radically different) should be mentioned. Newcomers to Miles might view this article and not realize there is any distinction. Secondly, The section "Collaborations" might be better renamed to "Albums Recorded As Sideman," as it is called on the discography pages of other artists. Also of issue for me is the "Box Sets" section. I like that there is a section for the Columbia numbered box sets, but I don't like that box sets outside of the series are in the same section. I also don't know how I feel about Circle in the Round, Birth of the Cool and Miles Davis Vols. 1 and 2 being in the compilation section, as they feature exclusive and unreleased music, and therefore seem more like studio albums to me. I'm not sure what the consensus is on this issue, however, maybe one can be reached here? And the entry "Miles Davis in Europe" 1964 in the compilation section is merely a duplication of the "Live in Europe" album above in the live section, where it belongs. I can fix that. One more thing. The use of the terms "Columbia", "Sony", "Legacy, "Sony/Legacy", and "Columbia/Legacy" all seem to be interchanging freely in this article even though they are basically all referring to the same entity. Not sure what the best fix for that is, though. Thanks for reading, and once again thanks for the so far very good article. ExplorerPlus (talk) 03:08, 22 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for your great effort to review this discography!
  • I don't think this should be sorted by the recording date. Most of the recordings are not available, so I see no problems to sort by release date.
  •   reworded Collaborations -> Albums Recorded As Sideman
  •   reworded Numbered box sets -> Compilation box sets
  • Circle in the Round, Birth of the Cool and Miles Davis Vols. 1 and 2: Mh, Allmusic says they are compilation albums. I will have a look at this.
  • "Columbia", "Sony", "Legacy, "Sony/Legacy", and "Columbia/Legacy": I don't exactly understand what you mean.

Again thank you to review this list! Regards.-- ♫Greatorangepumpkin♫ T 13:54, 22 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Thanks. How about this then? We keep the sorted order exactly the same as it is, and put the recording dates in the info box. The recording dates for most Miles Davis are actually incredibly well documented and featured on almost all of the individual album articles. The reason I'm wanting this is because there is sometimes a big difference between the two. So while the Cookin', Relaxin', Workin', and Steamin' albums should be left sorted as they are, by release date, it is equally important to add that they were all recorded over the course of 2 recording sessions in 1956 (11 May and 26 October). I am proposing that we ad the recording dates to the "Album Details" box, but keep the order the same. If you are alright with this, I can get that started. What I meant by "Columbia", "Sony", etc. is the labels. All 5 of those names I mentioned above are used to refer to (nowadays) basically the same company. I'm not sure which would be the best of the 5 names to use for everything though, so let's leave this one as it is for now. One more thing: the Live at the Blue Coronet 1969 live box set appears (according to a collectors' consensus on this forum: http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php?/topic/61515-miles-davis-complete-live-at-the-blue-coronet-1969/) and elsewhere to be a low-quality bootleg. Wikipedia usually doesn't include bootleg releases in their discog articles. Thanks. ExplorerPlus (talk) 03:28, 23 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

  • Thank you for your response! I have no issues to add the recording dates. I will add as much as I can. I didn't know the labels were the same; are you sure they are the same? Thank you to remove the bootleg; yes they should not be listed here. If you find more of these, such as bootlegs, unreleased albums, unofficial albums, please feel free to delete them. Regards.-- ♫Greatorangepumpkin♫ T 12:55, 23 February 2011 (UTC)Reply
  • I think the recording date should not be added in the columns "Compilations", "Compilation box sets", because the compositions are mostly from different times and I therefore don't think it is necessary to add the recording dates here. I am not sure about the other box sets sections and "Live albums"; fact is, that I haven't found (in sites like allmusic and musicbrainz, but also amazon) recording dates of most of the albums, especially those which were released in the 40s, 50s, 60s. The same for box sets. What do you think? Any advice is welcome. Regards.--♫Greatorangepumpkin♫T 18:51, 4 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

In fact the recording dates for every single Miles Davis release can be accurately found in the info box of its own wiki article. That's where I would look. ExplorerPlus (talk) 21:12, 16 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

__________________________ it looks like all these albums listed are twelve inches I would like to see his original early fifties ten inchers listed, as they were the original versions: for example I believe Dig, ... And Horns, and the two Blue Note albums were all repackagings of older teninch albums released in the midfifties when the teninch format was abandoned ... thus they are compilations as much as Birth of the Cool see for example how the Sinatra discography page is organized, giving a much more historic sense of how this material was originally released -J Edward McMilesFan __________________________ — Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.250.254.58 (talk) 03:17, 24 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

Recording dates vs. release dates

edit

Some editor or editors apparently do not understand the difference between recording date and release date of an album, as no album in history has ever been released the same day it was recorded. Release dates for jazz albums are difficult to ascertain, but putting in the recording date as the release date is just plain stupid.PJtP (talk) 03:12, 4 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

The recording dates and release dates are from Allmusic, see for example walkin'; I am also sceptical about that since I saw that, but why should they write false information?--♫Greatorangepumpkin♫T 18:19, 4 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
Assuming you are not being sarcastic, for starters AllMusic is not the final word on anything. They are simply copying the recording date and putting it into the release date category out of laziness. How could it be physically possible to record the music, master the discs from the tapes, write the liner notes, design the album cover, manufacture a hundred thousand or so albums, and get those albums into stores all in the same day? John Lennon was very proud that his 1970 single "Instant Karma!" arrived in stores a mere ten days after it was recorded — and this was a single, just two songs on a seven-inch 45 rpm record.PJtP (talk) 04:43, 20 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

I have compiled the following list of Miles' 10inch lps

I would like to add these to the discography, as the early years are currently incomplete and inaccurate

the first several Prestige albums as well as the Blue Note material were originally released in the 10inch format, and I think some of the confusion re recording dates vs release dated could be resolved if the discography listed the original releases, and acknowledged that Dig, ...and Horns, Walkin' etc are reissues that compiled this same material years later in more random permutations

even without the release dates we can show the correct sequence of both 10 inch and 12 inch lps from their catalog number, at least by label

here is the list, all sourced from http://www.jazzdisco.org/prestige-records/catalog-100-200-series/#prlp-124, http://www.discogs.com and/or http://www.plosin.com/MilesAhead/Main.aspx, (AllMusic, like Wikipedia, is incomplete and inaccurate)

this pg is also a good resource: http://www.birkajazz.com/archive/prestige.htm

PRESTIGE:

PRLP 113 Fats Navarro/Dizzy Gillespie/Miles Davis/Kenny Dorham - Modern Jazz Trumpets (various artists, Miles gets three tracks)

PRLP 116 Lee Konitz - The New Sounds (as a sideman)

PRLP 124 Miles Davis - The New Sounds (his actual first album)

PRLP 137 Sonny Rollins Quartet (as a sideman)

PRLP 140 Miles Davis Blue Period

PRLP 154 Miles Davis Plays Al Cohn Compositions

PRLP 161 Miles Davis Quartet

PRLP 182 Miles Davis All-Star Sextet

PRLP 185 Miles Davis Quintet

PRLP 187 Miles Davis with Sonny Rollins (aka Miles Davis Quintet)

PRLP 196 Miles Davis All Stars

PRLP 200 Miles Davis All Stars, Volume 2

BLUE NOTE:

BLP 5013 Miles Davis - Young Man With A Horn

BLP 5022 Miles Davis, Volume 2

BLP 5040 Miles Davis, Volume 3

CAPITOL:

H 459 Miles Davis - Classics In Jazz ( 1953) (Birth of the Cool material)

PRLP 7007 Miles Davis - The Musings Of Miles appears to be the first Prestige 12 inch, and 12 inch lps alternating new material or recompiling old material followed

my complete list has all tracks, sidemen, and recording dates. I can create simple pages for each lp as I go, showing which tracks ended up on each 12 inch reissue (and vice versa). There is artwork for most of these to be found in the source pages I've cited if its OK to reuse.

if I can remember my username/password and nobody objects I will begin adding this info to the discography page J Edward Malone (talk) 00:06, 9 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

Sorry, but

edit

the format of the tables with the chart listings is so very, very bad. It just doesn't make any sense for merely any jazz recording. For the few albums, that had recognizable commercial success, it could be noted in the text or as a foot note (or ONE extra column for certifictions and peak pos). Despite that, is it that what jazz is about. There might be only a handful of albums that charted AND have any historical importance (and here it's Miles Davis we are talking about). What is interesting about jazz recordings isn't accessable at all in these tables, where the real info is stuffed in one column. It's a really bad decisions. I would like to rewrite the whole thing, but I know, this format is already established, so any effort to do it right would be removed. Besides, many of the info is factually not right, or at least confusing or misleading. There is obviously a preference for recent releases of the albums instead of the original issues. Who knows, what the following years will bring with iTunes and the effort especially by Sony to re-release the original albums (10" too) besides voluminous box set releases. Maybe Beautiful Ballads & Love Songs are the future, a really important compilation, that thickens the discography. I'm joking. Sorry, but... MenkinAlRire 21:00, 31 May 2015 (UTC)

Me too, I absolutely agree. I came here to find Miles discography info and.. it's craptacular. (Apologies to whoever entered the info, must have taken a long time.) Half of these have no recording date! But the position in the Swedish charts etc is dutifully recorded. Ridiculous as you say. I didn't look over the whole thing, but what recording dates there were seemed right. This would be A LOT better reformatted as you suggest, with the 'chart' information maybe in a little table at the bottom of the page, and the main tables showing recording and release dates, label Gee. There might even then be space for WHO is on the recordings and WHERE they were recorded. Or what is on it. i.e. actually useful/important/interesting information.
I have been annoyed by this format on other pages (e.g. Herbie Hancock's). Would it really be reverted? Hmm. It's worth asking about this, I think. I can't imagine that many jazz musicians/Miles experts would object, or want to revert it. (oh haha I didn't see 'Beautiful Ballads and Love Songs' hmm yeah.) Agree 100% with what you say. Also, it's sooo horribly commercial. Like it's the sales that matter. Well, it doesn't even emphasize that, but the fairly arbitrary 'charts' in an arbitrary list of countries. Let's do this. i.e. Yes please, redo it. If you can, without taking too long. I'm not a wiki expert.. but I think announcing this and waiting a few weeks/months to see if anyone objects to your proposed changes is a good idea. And maybe ask an admin type how set-in-stone the format is. As you say, for jazz it's ludicrous. And, I presume, only more ludicrous for anyone else in jazz than Miles. 110.20.158.134 (talk) 06:55, 2 June 2015 (UTC)Reply
I also agree - I just added a previously missing record (Jazz Track), and moved another (1958 Miles) to the Compilations section where it belongs, and its a bother to make such basic edits because of all the empty fields ... try opening the page as an edit session and you'll see how maddening it is just to find the album you intend to edit, let alone select cut and paste all the lines of characters making up one record to another location on the page ... all the empty fields for any given record take up more space than there is visible in the edit window
all those fields for chart positions need not be cluttering up this page, if someone cares that info could be edited into the pages for the relevant albums
note even the column headers for those fields take up more than their share of space (eg Cont./Jazz/Albums/[10] shows as 4 rows on my screen, plus "Peak chart positions" is a fifth), the column headers could be one row without them
and if the recording dates, release dates, label, and formats were then redistributed as four fields, the record for each album would then be one row, not four or more, making the whole page much easier to scroll through and find information
