Name sort

edit

"Van" names are hard to sort correctly. Do we have a confirmation that "Wely, Loek Van" is correct? FIDE has "Van Wely, Loek", although I don't think FIDE is a particularly authoritative source for this sort of information. Quale (talk) 07:21, 28 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

I've always thought it was the way FIDE did it, but according to Van (Dutch), he would be listed as something like "Wely, Loek van" in the phone directory. I don't know which way we usually do it. decltype (talk) 07:30, 28 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. You made me reexamine the name sort changes I made in Index of chess articles and I found I had made a couple mistakes. Quale (talk) 08:16, 28 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
On a similar tack, I've just noticed some instances of capitalised Van, Van De, Van Der etc. following the christian name, which I gather is completely wrong. I'll correct these. Brittle heaven (talk) 09:13, 28 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
