I reverted this edit as it contradicts my understanding of the discovery of the Abrolhos and you've provided no source for your claim. Refer J.S Battye [1]. -- Moondyne 05:52, 7 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Further reading reveals you're probably correct. Reverted back with copyedits. -- Moondyne 06:39, 7 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

I've reverted again back to the original version awaiting viable references before inclusion of Menezes encounter in 1527. -- Moondyne 13:07, 9 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Connection to "Abre Los Ojos" irrelevant?

edit

Why is it irrelevant that there is a film with the same name?

The Portuguese Abrolhos / Abra-os-olhos is equivalent to the Spanish "Abre Los Ojos" ("open your eyes"), where it was the name of the popular movie thriller Abre Los Ojos, later remade by Tom Cruise into Hollywood blockbuster Vanilla Sky. Zuytdorp Survivor 06:01, 4 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Etymology

edit

Are we sure that "Abrolhos" does not originally come from the phrase "open [the] eyes"? I do realise it is a word that refers to rocks near the surface of the sea/man-made obstructions for those navigating those waters, but it seems awfully obvious that these obstructions have that name precisely because as you are navigating the sea you need to watch out for them. A good way to put this in English is that they are essentially called "eye-openers". As such, if these islands are named after that, the etymology of the name would still trace back to the words "open [the] eyes". I have no source for this particular etymology, other than proficiency in the language and a degree in language/linguistics, but my instincts would tell me this is the case. I would appreciate it if someone with more knowledge of the etymology of this word in particular could chime in.
