Talk:Hawking's time traveller party

Contradictory conclusions?

edit

We've got quotes from Hawking that he regards the party as experimental evidence that time travel is not possible while also hoping that one day someone living in the future will find the information and use a wormhole time machine to come back to my party, proving that time travel will one day be possible. On the surface these seem contradictory. Is the second quote missing some context? Belbury (talk) 13:19, 4 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

Oh, I think I get it: the hopeful speech is (per the video clip) possibly from a TV show where he's staging or reenacting the event, and he's imagining what its outcome might be before it has happened.
But the cited euronews.com source has put the two quotes alongside each other and in the wrong order, years later, as if he was disappointed about time travel being disproven in 2009 yet remained hopeful that it might be proven using his 2009 invites "one day". Which has a nice narrative news story shape to it but makes no sense.
I've restructured the article to make it clearer that he was saying one thing before the event and the other afterwards. Belbury (talk) 15:44, 4 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

Another way to look at this is that, when time travel is invented, one of the key rules of using it responsably is to never show up to this party. 2A0A:EF40:EF9:3202:3844:97A6:3D9B:82EA (talk) 14:14, 9 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

@2A0A:EF40:EF9:3202:3844:97A6:3D9B:82EA Interesting theory. I would not have gone there either if I was a time traveler. Laveravalentina (talk) 20:18, 26 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
I hope I didn't cause the fact that time travellers never showed up at the party because I created a page about it and now the Wikipedia article is spreading to other languages, so that it may be very famous in the future! 😉😅 Kind regards,   S. Or maybe time travellers are reading this message in the future and think about your comment and reconsider showing up at the party!   S. Perquin (talk) (discover the power of thankfulness!)22:13, 26 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
@S. Perquin Or you might think that Hawking decided not to reveal the meeting and died with his secret. However I think that in reality if you ever travel into the future it wouldn't happen with your body. Perhaps we could send messages in the past or electronic impulses. @Laveravalentina, maybe! Have you ever heard of the tachyon? It's a hypothetical particle that could travel back in time. But it almost certainly doesn't exist, according to Discover Magazine. But it is still a fascinating idea! Kind regards,   S. Perquin (talk) (discover the power of thankfulness!)09:57, 28 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
@S. Perquin Thank you for the answer. Ever heard of Quantum entanglement? Who knows if it can be used to communicate through space time! Laveravalentina (talk) 12:21, 28 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
Cool, I never heard of it! I am curious about the possibilities of time travel in the future! Kind regards,   S. Perquin (talk) (discover the power of thankfulness!)13:12, 28 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
