I feel glad in sharing the Project Exports figures for year 2006-07 which stood at Rs. 11381.36 crores and almost doubled as compared to Rs. 5942.79 crores in previous financial year. Though this appears to be great news looking at the broad figures the fine print behind them is a cause of concern since the majority of these exports have been done by only two companies Punj Lloyd Limited and L&T Limited.

While expressing my joy on the feat attained by Indian Project Exporters, I would also like to emphasize the need to tap great potential for Indian project exports. I do understand that ample and lucrative opportunities available domestically in construction sector have been responsible for lack of interest in bidding for project overseas, however overdependence on a single market for major business revenues is high risk factor in long run for any business. Therefore I hope to see more Indian construction companies looking aggressively at opportunities overseas.

Increased activity has also been noticed from companies in Middle East in terms of forming joint-ventures with Indian companies for executing projects in Middle east as well as in India. This could provide a firm footing for small and mid-sized firms in Gulf market.
