Student Editor

edit

Hello everyone! I am a new student editor currently taking a course at Texas A&M University. I saw that this article needed some improvement, so I'll be editing this page over the next few weeks to complete my assignment. My goal is to clean up the article with some rewrites and doing some reorganizing of sections to create a more coherent article. I'll be running my major changes through one of my sandboxes first, and moving them to this page when it feels finished, so feel free to check on that if you like!

I'd love to hear from any editor who has questions or comments about my contributions, or tips for a new editor! Thanks, Jsalads (talk) 20:41, 1 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

Reorganization

edit

Hello editors! I just completed my first major edit on this page! I found that there was an excessive amount of sections that were too short and too specific, (e.g. Host plants, Education and conservation, Genetics) so I decided to condense the original 13 down to 8. A decent amount of paragraphs were in the wrong places, so I rearranged those paragraphs into the cleaner, more condensed sections. I removed the Related Applications section and most of its content because it had little to do with actual commercial butterfly breeding. 07:37, 9 March 2021 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jsalads (talkcontribs)

History & Lead

edit

I changed the last couple sentences of the lead to be more concise. I removed the sentence about the activity not affecting biodiversity, I felt that it could be moved into another section. I did some rewrites in the 1977-present history section, and added the citation I could: the Guernsey tomato one. I mostly had to tag for citations because a lot of claims were made that I felt needed citing but I could't find a source anywhere. I also sourced the list of leading butterfly pupae producer, as well as elaborated on the Niagara Parks Butterfly Conservatory. Jsalads (talk) 08:50, 21 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

Breeding Practices, National Regulation, Commercial Activity

edit

In the Breeding Practices section, I added what the acronyms IBBA and AFB stood for in order to be more helpful to readers. There were a lot of claims made in this section that seem true, but citations would make the content stronger, so I tagged quite a bit of these sentences. Under the National Regulation section, I linked out to the USDA wiki page. All of these paragraphs needed more citations to support the claims made. The Commercial Activity section was cited decently, but at the very end there was a couple sentences referencing a "Florida Keys" butterfly that was restored from endangerment, which after some research I found to be called the Schaus' Swallowtail. I elaborated on this topic and cited it properly. Jsalads (talk) 14:35, 22 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

Removal of Disease, parasite, and predator controls

edit

This was originally its own section, which I downgraded to a subheading 1, which I downgraded to just a short paragraph underneath a subheading about host plants. There were no other diseases or predators mentioned besides microsporidium, so I felt this content worked best in the host plant subheading, especially since it originates on/in host plants. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jsalads (talkcontribs) 19:01, 22 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

International economic impact and potential risks

edit

I gave both of these sections some rewrites. The original economic impact section needed a bit more focus. The last two sentences about Papua New Guinea and Mexico were too detached so I pulled them together into a new paragraph. In 'potential risks' I wrote a paragraph that considers the measures taken to prevent homogeneity in captive butterfly populations and cited them, to replace that last old claim in the lead that captive butterfly breeding 'doesn't reduce biodiversity'. I reduced one subheading length down to 'Disease and parasite transmission' because it was too long. I also properly cited the petition to designate the monarch butterfly as threatened.
